Put an order in for 30K of freezer bait yesterday and got a message to say that it had been dispatched today and would be with me Monday.......Nice and quick but I'm not particularly impressed that my fresh bait will be sat in a DPD warehouse over the weekend.... ....I thought most bait companies didn't send fresh bait out on a Friday...??

Hopefully at this time of year it will be OK but we will see.....

As I put the order in at 4pm yesterday I think it's safe to say it has come straight from their freezers, not that that makes any difference..

Yeah, you're right, most bait companies state on their website that they don't deliver on Friday for that very reason. Who did you order it off? Check them when they arrive and if they're crap, get them to sort it.

I will not name them at the moment, safe to say they are one of the leading manufacturers...I have checked their website and it doesn't say anything about not sending on a Friday....

Dpd rubbish courier the one that delivers here wears pillows on his hands when he knocks on the door plus is also blind as he don't see the door bell too
But had the same thing from premier baits phoned them said take the bait Monday and throw it in the bin and they sent a new batch out Brilliant service from them
Of course I threw 20kg in the bin when I got it

Agree Joss, I think it will be OK, warehouses are cold at this time of year, sweat boxes in the summer though!

Their quoted turnaround was up to 10 days so I didn't think in a million years it would be sent the following day... .....and why would they even chance it? Obviously if it turns up on Monday sweating and not looking very healthy that's going to be 30K of bait they are going to have to replace...so why not just despatch Monday to Thursday??

And the amount of bait this company must churn out every week you would think they would have known better.....🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

you'll be fine this time of yr mate

i try and time my orders and even tell them when i want it delivered. The issue normally lies with the couriers more than the bait firms though...they are so crap most of the time

Personally I'd never buy bait from a company that want's to send me frozen bait, never have done.

Any company worth it's salt with a good turnover would have fresh bait every day or at least be able to put a batch together within a few days. Fair enough for low volume orders but definitely not over 10kg.

You dont know how long that baits been in their freezer let alone delivery hold ups. I know of a tackle shop that turns it's freezers off every night, some poor sods end up with the bags at the bottom at some point, the ones that have been there all year.

Have a read of Essential Baits delivery info, that's how it should be done.

I would imagine this particular company will be in the top 5 of bait producers, if my bait has come from theirs freezers I'm pretty confident it hasn't been there very long...

That's fair enough but that should really mean there's no need to ship frozen bait.
Think about it, if they are that good and that busy they should be shifting it as quick as they make it and not having to stick it in a freezer for 48 hours to fully freeze, it doesn't add up. (apart from stuff made Friday pm maybe)

Depends on the size of the company I'd say

A big direct selling company like DNA for example will likely have rolling schedules and not roll to order. I'd imagine with their lead times they state on the website (10 days I believe?) allow for this schedule.

For example Mondays maybe S7 rolling and they roll 2 ton of bait but only have 1.8 ton of orders so the surplus 200kg goes in the freezer once the 1.8 ton has been sent out. That 200kg in the freezer could only be in there a day or 2 before it's been sold

Smaller companies can easily roll to order and send out fresh but I'd be fairly confident that any big volume bait company has freezers that they use for surplus stock

Doesn't account for bait being sent out on a Friday though and sat around for a few days in warehouses/vans etc and I wouldn't be to happy about it but it wouldn't be the end of the world, unless the bait was completely ruined

I'd be amazed if any bait co would send you frozen product at the weekend.

Its no secret that some of the big bait co's only produce one product. 'Freezer' certainly doesn't necesserily mean its fresh rolled after you've ordered it and anything will go in a freezer.

Fine lines with the use of language and public perception.

Ok let's have some common sense here. I can't think of any companies that actually stand and roll your bait to order unless they are either very small and bespoke or you will have to wait weeks to get your bait. It's all well and good if you live local and can collect it on the day they are making it (well next day as it will need to dry). Generally bait companies roll one colour or flavour one day then swap to another the next day. And as for sending freezer baits, I have sent tons and tons and tons in freezer boxes, selected at 2pm one day, and at the customers the next day still frozen or chilled. There is no deterioration in bait in that state at all. All problems occur on a Friday so we never send out unless the customer pays for a Saturday special and takes full responsibility for being there to collect it! To say you don't want bait delivered from frozen is a bit silly when the hookbaits particles and pellets you use with it could be several years old! I'm an absolute advocate of really fresh quality bait as I have said on here for years, but we need to be realistic. The really big brands produce tons per day, ship it backwards and forwards, to shops, send it out in poorly insulated bags and yet they still catch plenty of carp. I'd still rather people came to collect but my mates in the north won't drive all that way when you can send it for 7 quid within 20 hours.....often within much less than 24 hours. Also I would add that a bait rolled fresh, then dried for 24/48 hours, then bagged for a day, then sent out for 24 hours without being chilled is in a worse state that one that spent 24 hours drying then frozen solid!

Even freezer bait will have a small amount of preservative in it & with the temps as they are it'll be fine !!

You don't have much luck with bait deliveries do you

I'm lucky in that I've got a very good company close to home and can pick up fresh bait, whenever I've fancied a change the delivery aspect has been so hit and miss I end up back at the same company

At this time of year its not really an issue though

I wouldn't want my bait turning up frozen I like to see it fresh in the bag just my preference. My rolling baits orders have always turned up fresh rolled to order unfrozen. It may take a few days longer but that's absolutely fine in my eyes.

ABS do, pretty sure Poachers do as well. Used/use both and they always tell me when they are rolling it and sending. Never turn up with condensation in the bags, which is a tell tale.......

Well my order turned up about 35 minutes ago. Bait was fine and "cool" to the touch, no sweating and only a slight trace of moisture on the outside of the bags. 3 of the 5K bags were vacuum packed so no chance of those turning, Boilies look, smell and feel great.

It will still be a lesson learned though and I will make sure if I order late in the week next time that I tell them not to send on a Friday!

Salt sugars are both preservatives oils contain butylated hydroxyanasole a preservative the liquids contain preservatives betaine contains potassium benzoate !! So how do you know that bait manufacturers don't put preservatives in their freezer baits 🤷‍♂️

And how long do you think they actually preserve for in the levels that are in them? Hours, a day or 2 at most so I'd hardly say you could say they were preserved ,could you?

That's what you want, fresh to the door

I used Premier for a few years, fantastic fresh bait, straight to the door, London, Paris, New York and Ramsgate

Used quite a few other companies too. I would have thought most decent bait company's roll it to order. I'm trying to think now if I have ever had some sent as frozen, nope, not that I am aware of

If your buying from people who don't deal direct with the public, shops and third parties then I guess it freezer surprise

Saying that, I am a liar, I have just bought 2 x 5kg of two popular baits for a couple of trips out I am planning, first time ever

As I said in my original post all freezer baits contain a small amount of preservatives & that the OP's bait would be fine due to this & the temps but hey you're obviously some kind of bait guru or just some dullard intent on an argument 🤡
