I have been making my own hookbaits for a few years now, in my former profession as a chef attention to detail is key, as such I put that into my hookbait making in regards to colours, flavours but especially in shape I'm not happy unless they are totally perfectly round as such has cut nozzles down to make perfectly round hookbaits.

Now my actual question, I have been nudged In the direction of making this a little buisness by a few friends who I gave the extras to of hookbaits I made etc but say I used Mainline flavours is that even legal to buy flavours from a company and use them to sell my own hookbaits?? I may be over thinking it but before actually making up loads of samples to garner interest locally I thought I'd check hopefully someone on here will be able to answer

It perfectly fine to use other people's flavours and then sell the hookbaits as your own. It's what all the other hookbait making firms do.

Hi Jamie,

Wife's been through this before. An ingredient is part of a final product. You can use another companies ingredient to produce your final product as long as your final product does not infringe on any other companies product.
See big Mac vs big jack that's currently gong on in Australia. Boilies are obviously more important, but these guys are going at it over a burger FFS
Best

I'd of thought as long as your marketing them as your own. And not actually say Mainline or Sticky you should be fine. Most of the companys out there buy in other companys flavours to use.

Good time to start up a hook bait company. The Pop up Market seems to be very " buoyant " at the moment....

EDIT...In fact, seeing how much some of these old deadstock flavours are going for. I'd be getting into the snide market.. knock up a few labels buy in a few generic flavours ( no one would be able to tell the diffrence anyway ). Two hundred notes for 50ml easy money..

Cheers mate, like I said if there's no interest locally to start with it will end up being pointless but fingers crossed, anyone who is interested when I have made up some samples just let me know

Good luck mate.

Why not source your own flavours?

its not as if the big bait boys actually make their own anyway...its all bought in from flavour compounders

I use a mixture of flavours in my baits. From catchit labs, premier and a couple from BAF. All are very good.

Hi mate simply atm because some of the larger suppliers I looked at have minimum quantities, it things start taking off then yes I will do exactly that BAF is one I have looked at but when I looked at the site they only had a few flavours

companies get twitchy if you use the names that they do. for example you could make pop-ups that contain cell activator and call them anything you want apart from cell. if you mentioned the word cell you would probably be hearing from mainline's lawyers. most flavours have quite generic names so most things you would be fine with.

Yes that would be a very silly think to do that's sorta what I was asking that even using their flavours would be a copyright breach cos like ccmoore live system nash Citruz most of mainlines baits are copyrighted

If you buy there flavours then you will have no problem saying its a Cell (or whatever) popup. Others do it all the time.

But labelling it as cell and selling it yourself is a trademark breach so if others do that ok but I won't be

Are they any good though? What's your angle? So many nods selling hookbaits its unreal. If you'r another i wouldn't waste your time and just get another shift in the kitchen - £1,£2 a pot - got to sell a few rather than earn a wage.

Funnily enough I saw a bait firm selling cell and active 8 the other day, the description stating it was their own basemix with genuine mainline activators in, which is obviously a p take as the baits are essentially not the cell or activate 8 but if your labelling them as cell 'flavoured' hookbaits I can't see the problem, on the other hand there's a hookbait company called carp junky selling exactly that plus others from other well known companies that recently had to change the names of 3 of their hookbaits as one company objected to them using their bait names, not sure which one though.

Mainline are not keen on anyone using their product names unless it comes from mainline. My advice, say what you use but call them something else (that's inside info too)

It will be good to have another company/bait maker who take care in the hookbaits. Nothing annoys me more than pop ups that don't pop up or wafters that take a hook and shot to counterbalance. When this is set up you need to tell me as be interested in buying a few pots

My angle is, a) to start I will do maybe 5 flavours etc but there will be an option for customisation etc, like powdered feed stimulants, specific colours, flavours, levels of buoyancy etc. For instance I like a pineapple pop up but the vast majority are bright yellow, so I made some white ones took em to a lake where they had been hammered on yellow pineapple(observing from up a tree the fish were shying away from them) but were readily accepted.

B) too many companies pop ups have inconsistent buoyancy's so yes the base range will be ultra buoyant and if people want to customise all they will have to do is simply send me a message with their requirements etc

C) I'm ocd(like had to be medicated not just a tidy person) so when I make my hookbaits if they aren't perfectly round it bugs me, again this will be a customisable option for customers etc
