Evening chaps,
I thought it would be interesting to have a thread that talks about, and lists, base mix recipes that have had history for being great baits old or recent.
I'll start with a couple.
Premier fish mix.
25% capelin meal.
25% sardine and anchovy.
25% Sluis clo.
15% acid casein.
10% lactalbumin.
And the,
Big fish mix.
2oz capelin meal.
3oz sardine and anchovy.
3oz white fishmeal.
3oz Sluis clo.
2oz acid casein.
1/2oz kelp powder.
1/2oz robin red.
1oz nutrapro.
1oz nutralac.

I can't vouch for the accuracy but this is what I heard was in Rod Hutchinson's High Protein base mix
50% Casein
20% Lactalbumin
20% Calcium Caseinate
10% Soya Protein Isolate
or
40% Casein
20% Lactalbumin
20% Calcium Caseinate
20% Soya Protein Isolate
I used this base mix for a short while but found I did better on a bird food, liver, Robin red bait glugged with body building cherry flavoured aminos

Cambs, I have the ingredients as you likely do, levels shouldn't be too off the original, the 'mixed spice' would be ???
Then the RR at that time was the real deal, nothing like nowdays so you would have to compensate for that too.
One of the very best baits ever made IMHO

70% Nectarblend

10% wheat gluten
...worked like a charm.

The one I'd absolutely love is the original activ8.
I've seen it said several times that it changed due to an ingredient becoming unavailable, but no one seems to know which ingredients it was. In fact even after all these years there still doesn't seem to be an agreement of whether it actually contained fishmeal or not. I been told that it was designed by Allen Clarke but again I'm not sure if that is also rumour as others have said he designed original grange
If we could find out the original recipe then perhaps there might be a suitable replacement using a modern ingredient.

My friend used active 8 very successfully so of course I had to try and copy it, I used meat and bone meal with fishmeal, liver and yeast and John Baker's meatball and Hutchinson SSA. Whether I was anywhere near I have no idea but it certainly smelt close and was one of the most successful baits I've ever made.

Ah so Allen Clarke must be Activ8. I've heard a couple of different versions.

Interesting one Activ 8. I have rolled a bit. The base mix ingredients used to be on the buckets, very basic ingredients really and was one of their cheaper bases. I always thought the magic was in the liquid, sugars, enzymes, that activated the bait when mixed, hence the name, activator who knows?
The bait was said to have 8 activ ingredients in it, which looking back at the base mix ingredients I would say it wasn't those, who knows?
Activ 8
Their CELL products are interesting too lol
Somebody does

Mate of mine "copied" Activ8 at the time it was dominating many lakes, just used the same attractors - we christened it Scally8 - it did just as well.

Does anyone know a good ham flavour available today?

Richworth used to do a boiled ham flavour
Whether that's still available I dont no?
Could try British aqua feeds or Catchit labs people seem to rate them.
