Been putting line on carp reels for 35 years no problem till now I am getting a fold or kink every few turns which I pull tight to wind it on the line is Gardner dark 15lb I am worried that when I cast it will cause a birds nest anyone had this problem

Interesting, I'm just about to change some newly spooled Gardner light blend after a two night session... Bad line twist and kinks when being knotted. I even managed to make it go curly just packing my rods away earlier. Wonder what's changed, I've been using this for about 18 months with no issues and spooled them up in exactly the same way as I always do. Lost confidence in it now, think I'm going to try some p-line extrusion instead...

Put the spool on its side, try one side first. After a few turns let the line between rod tip and spool go slack. If it twists up then turn the spool over and take the line from the other side. If you let it fall slack after a few turns and it doesn't twist up than thats the right way.
If it's still bad the. Check your line roller on your bale arm

I've had the same issues recently with a variety of lines. Anything I should be looking for on the roller?

First thing I'd do is watch

So if you've not had a problem for 35 years, are you only getting the problem since using the Gardner?
If so the line is off the spool it came on and the line is now on the reels so you can either bin it and go back to your old line or take walk it out in a field and wind it back or try a spin doctor details within this

I'm guessing you mean Gardner pro dark? I've been using Gardner pro light 15Lb and 12lb for quite a few years. People will tell me this is wrong, but I've found the best way to load it up is, soak for at least 24hrs, and allow the line to come off the label end, getting someone to hold the spool. It's the limpest and most supple mono I've ever used.

Just watched it. I've always loaded my line with the new line spool lead down so it curl off in the sae direction the bail arms turns

I had trouble for a little while
Then went back to the old way and put a pencil through the hole
Get the wife to Hold the pencil and wind it on lol

I've been using the Pro light blend for 18 months, always loaded with the label up too but it seems to have some issues for me on my latest spool of 15lb... even though I'm doing everything the same. Gardner have a video on YouTube with Lewis showing this is the best way to do it too. Just tried tying a knot with some straight off the spool and it's kinking when tightening the knot down...im wondering if there has been some storage issues in this heat perhaps, or otherwise a bad batch? It's been great until now

I had problems with some twist on Gardner Pro, but after checking, somehow the spool had turned upside down, label to bottom of bucket.
I put the line spool in a bucket of warm water, put the reel on the rod butt, and wind through the first eye, and between my finger and thumb, slowly keeping the line tight.
The reel that I had problems with, I noticed at the time, so was able to correct it.

Cannot comment on the gardner line but I have used something similar to THIS for quite a few years makes the job simple just make sure the line is coming from the bottom of the spool facing at you jobs a good un, you can adjust tension via the spring and thumlock so no need to burn several layers of skin off when the line is passing through your fingers.
For quite some time now I have been swapping and changing lines as more monos/fluros come onto the market and to be honest got fed up with them all with various issues so last week decided to spool up with good old Sensor in 15lb caught enough fish on it 20+ years ago, it went onto the spools a dream knots really well and the price isn't much more than it was 20 odd years ago.

Thanks for the link I have been putting off re-spooling several reels. I've just ordered 1 of these so now will have no excuse to get my arse into gear and get it all done.

Thanks for all feedback going to get it walked off spools and pull it tight for now and have a good look next time I also remember a mate said couple of years ago having same problem with esp line

So some say have the line coil off the side (usually with the label facing you) and the other method which is a variation of the pencil through the middle.
Looks like the two schools of thought remain

I remember speaking to lewis from gardner about spooling line one was gthd and the other pro light he said one was best spooled with the line coming off the side and the other with the spool spinning like it would with a pencil through the middle or in cereal container, but i cant for the life of me remember which was which

get yourself one of THESE for stripping the line, or an old line spool with a piece of threaded bar bolted in it on a cordless drill but then you have to empty the old spool once full, I just whizz it off straight into a bag with the line stripper then when I have a bag full take it to the tackle shop to recycle.

Thanks for the advice but I've been using a drill for stripping line for around 25 years only the other day took some off some barbel reels anyway the problem I have never seen before in 35 years

Yes i agree it would be better if all manufacturers would put the better spooling option on the packaging

Originally I was spooling up with the light blend label side up, two spools bad line twist. Now tried three more, one label side down, one coming off the bottom of the spool on a pencil and last one coming off the top of the spool with a pencil. Line was soaked for plenty of time. Getting bad line twist on all three spools... What gives
