If you have a spare 700 quid you can buy a new bivvy.

If you have 35 quid you can buy 5kg of hovis.

If you are just starting up again why are you spending fortunes on a pod? You could buy a front and rear pro lite buzzer bar and a couple of 11 inch sticks to get you going.

Then further down the line buy the goal post convertors and a couple more 11inch sticks. This would cover most situations, maybe add a couple of stagebites at a later date.

Then if you absolutely must have a pod, you can buy it on its own and use the sticks and bars you've already got. So nothing's wasted and you don't need to fork out for it all in one hit. This sort of stuff is a collection you build up over time.

Failing that there are always deals to be had at shows.

I used john Roberts butt grips for years on Solar then fox and then jag bars before I eventually went over lockdowns. I used Korda stows before I used mk1 and then mk2 safe liners on my jag bars.

Maybe it's just me but I wouldn't be trying to buy a load of top end bankware in one hit. Build it up a bit at a time. You could spend £400 on a pod and end up somewhere that doesn't need one. IMHO for what it's worth, buy quality stuff you'll use right now, basically bars and sticks.

I have a simple answer to that:
You don't need to buy the most expensive gear straight away, or in some cases at all.

A TFG Oval Umbrella and overwrap costs around £175 for the two items, a Trakker brolly alone is around £160 and a Fox Oval brolly, £130.

A Nash rod pod comes in around £60, or the Solar for £300.

You don't need to spend £150 on a reel when you can buy a decent reel for £75.

Give yourself a budget and get what you need, then you can gradually progress and upgrade if you need to.

I find a lot of guys like the real pricey gear because it's expensive. They pay little attention to what their practical requirements are.

Not saying that's the case with you though buddy.

I know plenty like that

I'm not shy about spending a few quid on the right item, but I just can't see the value in most of the premium rod support systems beyond tartiness. I did fancy the mpe gear but by the time I got my head round spending that amount on metalware they'd folded.
I bought my mates xpod when he 'upgraded' to a patriot pod years ago

Have a look on eBay at the Jag Prolite Grey stuff, discontinued now but you can pick up some quality bits for reasonable prices, best bankware I've ever had, keeps it's value within reason as well

It really depends what you want to do. If you are going to do a Steve Briggs or Darell Peck, then spending a small fortune on rods, reels etc would make sense as you are out fishing more than you are at home.

If, however, you just want to fish like a normal human then there is loads of great stuff around. Sonik Dominator X and Daiwa Crosscasts are great rods and Wychwood Riot 65s reels can't be beaten for the money. A JRC Contact SQR rod pod is bomb proof. You won't win any 'cool' carpy awards, but then if you are anything like me you won't give a flying f**k. I go fishing to enjoy myself, not to impress other people.

I was at the lake the other week and some guys were raving over one lads new graphite/carbon/uranium/solid gold bars and posts. He had to have the handles on his reel dropped so they all sat snugly together. To me it looked stupid, seemed impractical and I couldn't see the purpose. They cost him £300.

Each to their own.

I wouldn't compromise on rods, reels, alarms or a pod etc. If you have fished before and your serious imho.

Bivvies and crap like that are near on disposable items for me, couple of seasons they are probably knackered, buy a cheaper version for me.

I am waiting to see when the first £1000 Bivvie hits the market, pushing the prices up and up and up. It's a tent ffs which will be knackered or leaking in a year or two, if they came with a 5 year guarantee I can kind of see the justification in a £300 or £400 investment in a tent , otherwise, total rip off for me

What will this mean for me. It's means a £500 tent will be a complete pile of crap because they can charge that price and they will, otherwise you can shell out a grand on a pile of crap with a badge on it

I had not, the word “ridge monkey” does not interest me

I have now, did a search, that's not a tent, it's a bank-side palace, don't tell me, it's a grand

It looks like one of those that the Rainbow lads use in hamster balls Ellis's videos, oz tent

I suppose you get a bit more material with that

Wonder when the two storey versions gonna come out, family tent, take the kids with you and send them upstairs to bed when you have had enough of them

The problem with Carp Tax is there will always be someone willing to pay. I put a similar post a while ago about my worries if someone like Angling Direct ends up buying all the tackle shops and then charging whatever they like.

Yes £400 is extortionate for a pod (there are even some around £600-700) especially if you look at what the parts actually cost and mass production pretty much drops labour costs to nothing so the mark up will be unbelievably massive. Take a look at Defiant MPS which is a UK company (I believe one person) hand building pods at prices that are amazing. The problem there is some people will look at a MPS pod at say £220 and think it can't be that good because Solar make there at £600.... when the reality is the quality is most likley identical or better in regards to the MPS due to the custom/bespok make.

It is the same with Reels, I own some Daiwa Tournament 5000T reels because I like the look of them and embrace the 'retro' (also known as wobbly and creaky) feel. These cost me just under £280 each which I happily paid even through I knew the Shimano Aerlex reels I started off with many years ago at £70 would do the same job and most likely last (for my use) just as long. My mate has 3 x Basia reels because he associates their £700 price tag as being the best you can get, however he has had massive issues with 2 of them and they have been back several times to Daiwa.

It's the same with most things as YouTube etc makes it worse as we get to see just how amazing a £700 bivvy is on the lake in france, with 2 x Infinity Rods strapped to the side and 3 more on a £400 pod, £3k worth of reels and dropping £30 quid worth of leads on a 5 days session the norm. In reality I would imagine 90% of anglers could get the exact same results with a £150 bivvy, a £250 rod/reel combo and a £50 pod but you just wouldn't feel as cool as those YouTube 'celebrities'

Like it or loathe it, but carp fishing is only becomming a bigger business, I went to the NAS a few years ago with my son who was 12 at the time and 90% of the 'pro/celebrity' anglers we met were great and spoke with him/had their picture with him, however a few of them seemed to think they were more important than the pope and wouldn't give us the time of day which I believe is another indication the sport can go one of two ways in the future.

Good post Jon

Agree about pods. I was shocked to read a while ago on here that Solar is Chinese owned now

I had infinity's for near on 20 years, bullet proof

As for the hype, makes my **** itch

Celebrity carp anglers, that's a new one . Famous ones for doing special things in the pastime, yes, celebrity, spare me. I could not think of anything worse than been identified as a celebrity carp angler, yeah, he's the scruffy sweaty one over there with all the fit chicks round him

As long as I can find somewhere peaceful and I can crack on with my fishing I'm happy. I look through the Internet window at what goes off and I find a lot of it just unbelievable, some of it even cringeworthy

It's just a marketing machine driven by greed and people trying to claim fame

Thanks pal and spot on too.

I hold a little soft spot for the late 80's & early 90's when I fished with my uncle in an actual tent (not many purpose shelters back then) with a candle and stove for warmth and a set up you kept pretty much forever. We used to 'Guest' on many lakes and catching a 10lb carp would make us superstars in the pub. No camera phones and any pictures we did take took months to develop as we had to wait until the camera was full. I got into fishing again to be a way to switch off and relax but found myself constantly swapping and changing tackle, always thinking there was something better because I had seen it on YouTube etc.

Just before the lockdown I literally sold 50% of my kit and now fish a very simple 2 rod set up, banned myself from buying more gear and joined a new water with a great bunch of lads and none of the drama. It has worked wonders.

I'm afraid this simply isn't correct. Do you think these parts just appear out of thin air? A raw billet of stainless or aluminium turns up at the factory, for free obviously, everyone does a magic little jig, says a spell and whhooosh theres another box of bank sticks.

Have you got any idea what those CNC machines cost and how many of them you need to turn out any volume? Do you know what a CNC mill operator earns? It's millions of pounds to kit out the factory. Then theres all the office staff, the building, the utilities, the insurances, distribution, production staff, or do you think the guy that turns the metal screws it all together as well?, packaging, sales blah blah blah. Oh and dont forget all the out sourced labour as well, like platers and injection moulders, they are all obviously all working for nothing out of the kindness of their hearts just so the tackle manufacturers can make massive mark ups.

I tell you what, if you can find all these skilled engineering staff who's labour cost is nothing, do me a favour and pass me their number, I know loads of places that will let them work for **** all.

It's been a long time since ive read such a croc of **** on here.

Oh I am sorry have I upset you there?? I would almost think you worked for one of these companies.

You can buy aluminium pods for less than £28 which must by your reckoning magically appear out of nowhere as it must be impossible for these to be made and sold at such a price (also making a profit as I am sure they do not make them for fun) with all these CNC operators on football player wages, using million pound equipment and having all the staff and overhead costs you mention. I believe there is a guy on this forum making pods (and from what I read blowing most of the other brands out of the water even after they are copying his designs.)

Now I am not saying these will have the same finish etc as some of the larger brands but less than £30 for a pod!!

Perhaps magic really is real

Quick update. I can see looking on the forum that you have some affiliation with JAG so I honestly do apologise for my upsetting you as my comments were based on imported products where a quick google search shows I can by 5m of 316 stainless round bar (20mm) for around 200 Yuan (£25) as an end consumer so these companies who are mass producing (and buying bulk) will be getting far cheaper. 316 per KG is looking around 65 Yuan (£7.30 to an average consumer) and another quick search shows an average skilled labourer wage is around £7k per year with many reports I read stating that over 30% of the working population are believed to still be doing so under forced labour and earning less than £9 per day for 12-14 hours work. There must be some reason many UK companies move their production there

However I still do stand by my comments that £400 for a pod is excessive and £600+ even more so when there are so many other companies making products so much cheaper. I support UK manufacturing where and if you can hand on heart say that £65 for a bankstick with a camera attachment on the top or £60 for a couple of distance sticks is the best price you can make at and still be sustainable then I understand your frustration in my post.

You might need to check that again

I have worked in engineering all my life. The stainless tube used is very, very cheap, especially from China

The fixtures and fittings are a little more complex but with automated machining they can fire them out like bullets. Better still, just contract them out to an engineering business that runs a job shop, cheaper still, no overheads just cover the costs. Again, pence from China probably?

Might get some quotes!

CNC machine, XYZ company, for example, 20k if you want to go down that route. Conversational programming and ease of use, technology moves one, very simple to use nowadays. The skill element you mention has been designed out of it in a lot of cases. This route you are taking on a lot of overheads. I do not believe anybody would be this foolish would they!!!

I don't belive there will be many purely making fishing pods or started out making fishing pods It will probably be a transition or a sideline to their main workloads. Mind you, for what they can charge (£700!!!) it may be swing towards angling supplies

This is the real problem. There will be some who are making top quality products at a reasonable price, there will be some who are trying to flog cheap **** in the same category, that's what is really wrong, just screws the market up because of the greed and there will be some selling quality products at vastly over inflated prices because they can, but value is in the eye of the owner I guess

I had a RH pod in the past, did he have a machine shop, I had a JRC one in the past, do they have a machine shop? Probably Chinese crap?

Some companies, one in particular appears to be adding a very nice slice of carp tax for me but that's their choice and the anglers if they buy it. I know I won't. It's not the true value for me. I don't like carp tax, it's a rip off

The key point with all of this as I keep “moaning” on. When everything is a grand because it can be when the true value is around £50. Nobody should ever complain that fishing is an expensive pastime. People are seriously been ripped off. Their choice of course. Wonder how long away the £2000 tent is with a true value of around £60 because that's where all this is leading to, trust me!

Carpfishing is a million miles away to what it was for me. It's not about fishing it's about a falsified image driven by sales, greed and fame seekers where the must have products are all that matters, it's how you need to be seen, cause carpfishing cool in it. Fishing?, I did not realise it was about catching fish

Agree mate. Unfortunatly I got suckered into the YouTube sensations for a short while, spent an absolute fortune on all the latest gear, ended up hating having to get it to my swim (even more so having to move swims should I not be on the fish or they move) and it started to become a chore just getting the car loaded up. Not to mention watching videos everynight, seeing new kit that I just thought I had to have . I tend now to not watch a lot of the new videos on there and it keeps my money safe.

It has being a real trial and error process for me the last 12-18 months before I re assessed all my gear, filtered it right down and carry minimal kit now. I use a 2 rod setup with a spod/marker hybrid rod in a 3 rod holdall, on the outside I strap a landing net and sling. I am currently using the most uncomfortable rucksack in existence but it is a great size to fit all my kit in and for days sessions don't bother with a shelter or chair as my unhooking mat (Thinking anglers) is really well padded and has a waterproof cover I can sit on.

For over night sessions I use a brolly system (Fast & Light) but have not yet had to use the overwrap which lives in the car and would only really come out for emergencies and for quick overnighters I tend to just lay on the unhooking mat so again very minimal carry. I have a plastic box in the back of the car which houses spare gas, extra leads, spare terminal tacklet etc and that pretty much lives there for emergencies and under the passenger seat I keep all the extra parts of my pod should it ever be needed but tent to just use 2 4 stick singles setup for 99% of the time.

If I go for several days everything stays the same but I then add a bedchair, chair, barrow and baitboat which gives me a bit more stress but worth it for the extra comfort.

Sounds similar to me mate. I don't buy gear unless I really need it

Minimal gear too, as allways. It's about the fishing for me

Simple rule for me. Do I REALLY need it, can I afford it, can I find it cheaper elsewhere. Always does the trick

Often find I don't REALLY need it
