Thinks it's on the Drennan YouTube rather than ESP.

Did put me off seeing all the fish spawning and the just ploughing on with their fishing. Times change I suppose.

Thirty years on and still the benchmark, catching the impossible was great but didn't quite have the magic for me. Nothing else has come close in my eyes

Absolutely true and that's probably because Hugh Miles is a professional wildlife film maker and not just some herbert who bought a DSLR and learned to do close-ups and slow-mo shots

Passion took over three years to film and apparently was done with a single camera - which makes you wonder about the re-takes and acting involved in the 'tree incident'.

Interesting to see the ringing on Black Bob's rod, I doubt the butt ring would make 30mm yet alone these 50mm jobs that look like the entrance to the channel tunnel. His rods also had plenty of intermediates, much like a barbel rod - when did that all change?

It is nice to see a gentle "Hooray" and a firm handshake as opposed the "Get in", "Mega" and all that obllocks.

been watching Catching the Impossible over the past week.

some amazing fish caught and on some very simple tactics / rigs / gear. goes to show eh?

the episode (episode 8) where he takes a 10lb+ tench, a 5lb+ Perch and a 30lb+ Pike is a great watch!

I'll take the p out of most of the modern shouty ravey carp shows but that first nash film oli and Alan did was brilliant, was it urban banx? It really raised the bar for carpy videos

Try all they may, no one will ever be able to remake that magic of the original passion for angling. Not for me anyway.

When I was a kid, I won a local match which was at the time P.F.A. kindly sponsored and Bob James was there all day with the kids helping us with our fishing. For my prize, I got a P.F.A book personally signed there and then by Bob.

25+ years on still got the book and still quite proud of it. Just a bit gutted it wasn't Chris who signed the book instead!

I am 37 and remember watching the series when it was first aired - so watching it brings back memories of not just the programmes themselves but of that era, the family home for instance.

If carp fishing is still around in thirty years' time then another 37 year old may get as misty eyed when rewatching the Urban/Euro Banx series as some of us are when we revisit A Passion for Angling.

It's not about one era, technique etc. being better than another. Both series I've mentioned capture a moment in time - the equipment used, the vehicles, the technology - things that provide a reference point to look back on and see how society and has evolved and changed.

I did tbh but have forgotten after all these years, but was my neck of the woods, Dorset or South Wiltshire I think. I do remember a friend managing to get some info, but I think the view was they were over exaggerating weights, and the fish were nowhere near as big as discussed. Long time ago tho.
In terms of the 30lb mirror caught, that wasn't from there....

It's finished now after the fish were lost in a flood via an emergency sluice being opened, Fat Lady was caught in Hampshire. 'Harry' was never caught, Arnie was at high 30's.

Me too, I can watch them day in day out, just magical- fishing for the pleasure of it, nothing fancy, nice and basic.

Yes it was and caught in the closed season as well. I caught it first week of the season at 29.12 that year.
