Does anyone have a safe, practical method of fishing heli style with tubing and a top bead that's safe and an option to drop a lead ( not the c clips though as I just can't get on with them) Thankyou in advance 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Nash do a tungsten tubing bead. I bored mine out a little though to give a looser fit. Only issue i found was that the QC swivel that i had running on the tubing wasn't as free to move as when using lead core or naked.

The only safe helicopter system for tubing that I have seen was the old Gold Label one. I think that it was a commercial version of the CV Safety Rig.

I would go with the Korda Heli-safe for dropping the lead and ESP do a kit with a bead that fits snug on tubing but will slide off if needed.
Hope that helps 👍

How's the bead going to slide off the tubing without the weight of the lead ???

Two things I would say, first the tubing itself needs to be fixed otherwise it will not allow the top bead to slide, second the lead needs to be secure as it is the weight that allows the top bead to slide off.

Fixing the lead is easy, don't use a drop off method. Fixing the tubing is more difficult I find but if you attach the lead link with a loop you can force tungsten tubing over the loop knot and it will stay in place. Open up the whole in a buffer bead and this will ensure the rotating swivel is always on tubing while playing fish. The tungsten beads you can get slide pretty well on the tubing when underwater, not so well when dry. Stretching the tubing makes it slide easier... Now the clever bit, make the size of your loop to match where you want the bead to sit, the knot makes the tubing slightly wider and allows the bead to be semi fixed for casting.

Ian,
I wouldn't for a second use the rig the way the guy described but is it any worse than using a lead clip and tubing?
In the event of a breakage above the rig surely in both cases once the lead is ejected the fish is attached to the rig, the tubing and the line below the breakage, is one worse than the other...genuine question as I see this come up a lot and struggle to understand the logic, just me missing something I suppose.

There are a number of ways you could do this but all are potentially dangerous, so no.
A properly set up helicopter rig using modern components is in my opinion the safest rig, Provided the lead is FIXED.
Above the lead a buffer sleeve to protect the line during the fight, above that ring swivel with hooklink attached. Finally a bead system that reliably releases. My choice is Korda heli safes, they work. Nothing else needed. If you are really worried about naked heli use a tapered mainline. 40lb mono at the business end.

You mean the Korda No Trace beads?
The Heli Safe drops the lead.

I agree with you christian. While there is risk associated with dropping the lead on a heli it's the same as a lead clip. I find it strange that dropping leads on a heli is sometimes quoted as completely unsafe where you don't hear similar comments about lead clips.

Sorry, yes, no trace beads. How easy it is to mislead people.

I think dropping the lead on any rig makes it potentially more dangerous. I cannot think of a single trailer I've picked up that still had a lead attached, so the fish were dragging yards of line and more often than not, lead clips. No rig is perfect or perfectly safe but the only rig that will consistently leave a fish with the hook link only is a heli.provided the lead is is fixed.

Most likely no more or less dangerous than clips with tube to be honest, but imo dropping the lead without it becoming snagged up is rediculous and should be banned anyway. Dropping the lead may help land a fish but it also introduces new problems if the end tackle is lost.
The setup matey came up with earlier is the typical approach of many these days, first thing drop the lead then worry about the rest later. Piss poor imo

Agree 100% about unnecessary dropping leads, it is just fashion. Still think it's okay in certain situations just not that many.

Guys
My quick reply this morning does not read well and should have been explained more.
I suggested Heli-safe to the O/P as he asked the question.
I to am not of dropping the lead for the sake of it.
My reason behind using the ESP bead is so I could make a safe rig and not a death rig as posted!!
The diameter of the bore of the bead is roughly the same as the outer of the tubing.
I literally push the bead onto the top of the tubing so that it doesn't pass right through.
This will hold on a cast and the drop.
In the event of breakage this needs very little resistance to come off the end of the tubing. And I have checked this.
I admit that my original post was a bit misleading and bearing in mind I've been fishing longer than I care to remember I would never fish at all costs.

Ive seen this set up used by a few guys and it does seem safe , It is important to get the right top bead that will slide or use the drop off type to make sure the rig can come off the tubing and it would be safe, although ive not used it i would probably aim for a korda drop off bead type arrangement there so you know the rig comes clear no matter what.
The components are the important part though so they work together.
