Thinking about attending my first carp show this year and was just wondering can you get items such as rods and bivvies at much cheaper prices or is it pretty much the same as you would pay online? Thanks

You can definitely get deals if you are prepared to haggle a bit.

retailers would be mad not to do deals - what with market conditions and most companies online....

Out of interest, Stoneleigh and Farnborough are the same distance away from me.
Anyone been to both? If so, which one is better to go to?
Ease of parking etc

its a no brainer IMO but you must do your homework and know the online prices to beat
and YOU MUST HAGGLE to get the best deals and watch out for pick pockets at these big events

and watch out for pick pockets at these big events And also cars getting robbed, they watch for people dropping stuff off in their cars and going back in. Anything large I get the guys to put it to one side for me and collect when finished.

Is it all cash only? Nothing worse than seeing some deals and all I have is card?

Have not been to one of these shows for years. Do the Companies like Nash and Trakker sell their products from their stands or do they just display and leave the sales to the Retail companies that are there? I am looking for a good deal on a new bivvy.

They tend to do a few show specials, Korda do packs of products generally small items, i dont remember Fox or Nash doing anything on their stands but there will usually be a shop stand somewhere doing specials on their gear.
Sunday afternoon certain people will take cash for things, cough cough

It's very dependent on the individual business. For example trakker and aqua don't sell direct from their stands, they will have a tie in with one of the sellers there. Others like Gardner and Jag sell direct from the stand. Most of the bait guys sell direct. Delkim won't sell off of the stand. Etc etc. So it depends on what you are looking for.
One quick point on the business of getting a deal on a Sunday afternoon. That's not always the case now. The show season is now very compressed with very little time in between. Brentwood then zwolle about a week apart. Then tithe NAS and Farnborough only about a month apart and that's excluding the Eastern European shows, so in all honesty what doesn't sell will go onto to the next show. There's simply not enough time to manufacture loads of stock in between shows and then flog it off cheap cos you can't be arsed to carry it back to the van. My advice is if you see something you particularly want, even if that's 9am on the Saturday then ask for a deal there and then. The NAS & Farnborough are so big now with tens of thousands of people through the doors over the weekends. Stuff sells out. By Sunday afternoon what you want might simply not be there.

in a word no
if Trakker or Nash sold there bivvies cheaper and undercut the dealers they would go nuts your best bet is haggle with a dealer not the makers
but check the best internet prices before you go people like England Angling etc then you know the price you need to beat

Stoneleigh park last year was very poor, very few of the bigger names, some of the names where just areas put up by a retailer.
Spoke to the ccmoore guys and they said it was "alot" smaller.
Says it all, just look at the guest speakers at stoneleigh. Who are they?

Spot on, Ive been talking to a few manufacturers over recent weeks and they wouldn't dare undercut their dealers and so many don't sell direct. Stick with the dealers not the manufacturers.
Ive been haggling online with a few and the best show price I can get for a pair of ATTs an box is £185 at present. That is a show price and not online. I will keep going until I get them down to a tenner....bonnet de deuce.

jag sell direct to the public at shows, they're making a killing as theres no tackle shop middleman to take their 33%
In reply to Post #23
That's not exactly true. Your text gives the impression that somehow attending a show is free and therefore jag make a killing. Exhibitions cost jag a small fortune to attend. Each one is several thousand pounds. There's the stand cost, wages, hotel bills, food and drink for staff, fuel in a big vehicle (it took us four hours each way) Etc etc. Then factor in any discounts we give to encourage sales at the show and you quickly see that the 33% additional mark up you think they are making, and I'm not being rude, please don't think I am, but that's complete fantasy.
Jag sell at shows more because it's a good for brand share and to introduce people to the range. To put it simply is someone goes to an exhibition to buy some banksticks. If jag aren't selling then that person might go to a retailer who doesn't have the exact jag item they wanted, so they end up buying cygnet or summit or solar etc. Then that person is lost to the brand maybe for ever. No trader can carry the full Range on their stand like a manufacturer can.
Did you know that a lot of manufacturers consider it a good show if they break even and cover costs? The smaller to medium sized bait guys are literally just trying to cover their exhibition costs. It's a marketing exercise mainly.
We sold loads of stuff to first time jag users this weekend. No cos it was cheap. That's for sure. But because we had a full range. We hand it over to them. They can pull it about. Ask questions. Take their time. We can't expect a trader to have the time to do that. That sort of exposure at a show is invaluable. It's really not about making a killing. It really isn't I promise you.

I think what's he's saying is
Only paying jag solar Nash or whoever at whatever price they actually decide to sell It for at the show rather than say total fishing tackle angling direct or J Ross price after they have marked it up
So the manufacturer Can actually sell it for less at a show and then everyone's a winner
As you say it's not cheap to have a stand because of wages etc so going through a shop stand you are essentially paying two lots of wages food drink stalls etc
At least that's the way I am reading it

Absolutely true
Get your products into people's hands, meet your customers and try and break even!

Of course Jag are making a killing by selling direct and keeping the "shop" cut.
Trakker et all incur the same show costs and have to pass on an element to the retailer at the show as they are not selling directly to the punter.

Why do trakker have to pass anything on to a retailer just because they are selling it at a show? I don't follow your argument? Are you suggesting they give vale royal or angling direct for instance all the stock they have on their stands for free? Don't you think that might upset every other shop that trakker supply?
And your argument about them having the same costs as smaller manufacturers isn't true either. If you look at the square footage of the massive manufacturers stands they probably don't cost much more than what a small stand costs, cos they bring in punters when they attend and footfall is everything to a show organisation

Jesus, if I buy a Jag item costing £100 from a retailer at the show Jag make far less money than if I buy the same £100 item directly from them at the show. Trying to defend that by saying Jags overall show costs are greater than the retailer is equally daft.

I didn't say that.
What I said was that don't think that when a manufacturer sells direct at a show that it's all about making a killing, because it isn't, brand awareness and broadening market share are way more important. That's why the likes of Shimano attend with enormous stands that only have a tiny percentage of their product lines on show. They can't possibly expect the retailers who are present to sell enough of their gear to cover what their outlay to attend is, that's not the point. If going to shows was just about making a killing then none of the big players would bother. It's the reason they had a great big fishing simulator game on their stand, to draw people in and get them interested in their products.
Look at the size of the retailer stands. Look at the manufacturers who attend. The retailer stands only carry a tiny amount of the range available from each major manufacturer.

Well I understand exactly what you are saying ,
Take the boat show ,lots of small company's attend that many people know nothing about , Bang thousands of people walking buy taking an interest ,thinking ill remember them ,ill look them up later, ect ect
Its All about getting their name out their , if they sell something its just a bonus not the main aim.
