Hi all, after lots of research I've decided on either of these 2 reels, so I'm just after the thoughts of those that have used either of them, or even better both as to which are the best, they will be paired up with 12ft 3.25lb tc rods, unfortunately there are no stockists near me so I can have a look at them in person so I'm putting my trust in you guys lol.

The Penn are quality reels and I have a set on my 3.25lb tc rods and they balance really well. I have the 7000 versions as feel the 8000 are too big for my purposes. Not used this Okuma but have had previous versions and they have been OK. Imo the Penn is a far superior reel

Same choice I had. Went with the 8ks. Looked at the affinity of course but the 8k suited me better and were 50quid cheaper.

Not used the okuma, but the penns are brilliant reels. £50 dearer maybe, but most likely worth the extra. They really are very cheap compared to others on the market of similar quality

To be fair I've not had them long but so far so good. I don't subscribe to the weight thing being and issue. The difference between a top end reel and the Okuma is 250g.how is that going to negatively affect their performance? They are sat on my bars the majority of the time. With my ability at casting a couple of 200g is not going to make a difference. The clutches are lovely, they have two line clips, a big spool and cost me £65 each. What's not to like?

Agree regarding the weight I'm not put of by them being heavy, as you say they'll spend very little time being held. I think really ill be happy with either and I'd rather the cheaper ones really and spend the extra on bait but if there was a massive difference in quality and performance then that would be different.

I've played with both on a shop and found the Penn, when held in the hand not on a rod, wobbled like crazy when turned. I felt this could be an issue when used. It may have been a one off of course.
The Okuma is noticeably heavier and retrieves less than a metre per turn so it will give you big biceps or wrecked shoulders.

Weight affects rod action, but most rod's actions are horrific so the big heavy guides and bucket spooled beach casting reels give the impression they are a bit slower and are actually usable for fishing.
Not many have tried a 12-14oz reel and 20-30mm guides on lighter blanks for comparison, except those long enough in the tooth to remember when a 2.25-2.75 was a distance rod.

I have been around long enough. My first carp rods were Daiwa Whisker Kevlar 11ft 2.5lb TC with a 30mm butt ring coupled with a 6010 bait runner. Still have them and use them for floater fishing but I can't cast more than 70yds with them. That's where my 3.25 Free Spirits come in with the Okumas.

There's nothing wrong with the quality. Okuma have long since made quality reels which last years. The 8k is built like a tank. Stated retrieve is 108cm, not sure where you got your less than 1m figure from?

When I had my 11ft whisker kevlars they were only available in 1.75 and 2.25tc and these could still do 100 yards with 8lb maxima.

Most baitrunners outside the 4000 or ci4 versions are around 20oz and modern (Non sic) guides are much lighter in comparable sizes.
Blanks have been able to cast a long way for donkeys years, it's the hardware and the person holding it that's the handicap

Have to agree okuma do make quality reels as penn do.

Line lay is superb, clutch is silky smooth. Not compared to the okuma, but id be absolutely amazed if either were as good, let alone better on okuma

I think in my case it's definitely the person holding it at fault. To be fair I've never really fished anywhere that demands a longer cast until recently, hence why I'm not very good at casting.

Both are excellent reels with good clutches and line lay. You can't go wrong with either. I don't regret selling my shimanos and getting the Okumas.

Thanks gents I'm now no closer to deciding than I was at the beginning lol 
I was hoping someone would just say that one was crap and back it up lol, guess I'm just going to have to grow a pair and make a decision, it's just hard when you can't see them in the flesh.

Yes. Carbon effect. Much more expensive too. I'd go for the 8k personally for a out £70 each. Just picked up a set of 3 okuma dta 60 for my second set of rods for £130. Absolute bargain.
