In reply to Post #340 Unfortunately Andy you can't make something that is irresistible to carp, that's not also irresistible to all other coarse fish. Small roach can be an absolute nightmare mid summer. I've fished so many venues in my fishing life, the only place I've ever experienced what you speak of was on Sutton 2, where the small roach and bream were like piranhas. Freezer baits and the hook baits would get whittled down pretty rapidly in Sutton, for around a month midsummer. Eels can also be a similar problem with our hook baits.
Some venues like Sutton for a month or so in the summer can be a nightmare. So easy to get around though. Little squares of women's tights & a bit of floss will stop the little piranhas. Just wrap them in tights and tie with floss.
It's always baffled me as the river Thames & Medway are absolutely full of small roach, but I've never suffered the same problems on the river. They leave them alone It seems to be very specific to certain well stocked lakes with a large biomass. Places where the small fish have learned that boiled baits are the best food. Our hook baits are so attractive in a food sense, so the small fish will hammer them if they are really abundant.
Wrap with tights to stop that. In a few weeks it will stop anyway. They only seem to act like that mid summer. Take it as a great thing that what you are using is super attractive.

I fished a lake in Lincolnshire which was roach soup the tc wafters were getting mullered
Pretty quickly, switched to s4's and they were much more resilient.

In reply to Post #340 My one lake I can’t use them the roach and tench destroy them. But it’s a seriously loaded silver water.

In reply to Post #341 hmm thats weird, no crays in here.

In reply to Post #340 I've never had this ssue with any of the hookbaits and fish waters with lots of silvers in.. Only had this issue with crays on certain venues, but they destroy nearly all hookbaits. 👍

In reply to Post #328 A great read Mark. I also fished Johnson’s in the 70s through to mid 80s. Your description of watching a float all night, reminded me of the same - you could see that bloody light wherever you looked!. I was obsessed with Tench, and still occasionally fish for them now.

In reply to Post #328 Thanks Mark - great read and all freeeeee!!
I had a complex ticket for a few years and really wanted to target the Ocean. But got caught at Dartford in traffic a few too many times and ended up thinking suff it - for me it's a lake that got away.
