I have finally bit the bullet and got a set, now about these line clips?

Done a search and it keeps throwing up 'South Custom Reels' but they seem to have disappeared, is it just the Weston ones as an alternative or what other options can anyone recommend please, I'm talking self-fit?

South custom reels are now called reel king now their website www.customreelking.com , I think Johnson Ross also do the line clips

I have the Johnson Ross clips on my 5000t's never had an issue with them, phone the shop to see if you can have them fitted whilst you wait.

The Infinity ones I bought seem ok to me, someone said THESE are better but there's always someone who says they know better.

They are a bit fiddly to put on. See post #2 for a tip on Custom Reel clips

Jb customs did mine, full service and slow oscillators. I won't go anywhere else for my reels or rods to be worked on. Top man too. 👌

I have the 5000 t emblems - what's wrong with the line clips that you get with the reels ? why do they need customising ?

The originals shark tooth clips are not designed for clipping up. They're just line holders. They're nowhere near robust enough for repeated casting on the clip.

@Chuffy, I've fit/used JR, South Custom/Reel King, Future Fishing and Weston. All much of a muchness. If you go for the Weston make sure you get the spring loaded ones

ok thanks. so worst case scenario is the line clip breaks and i need to get it replaced ? or does the shark tooth one damage the line too ?

i might see if i can get my emblem x 5000t reels modified at the tackle box - is it worth changing anything else apart from the clips?

It can damage the line too. One solution is to wrap a little pole elastic round the original clip to cushion the blow as it hits the clip and protect the line.

Great idea

I replaced the old shark tooth clips on my emblem Xa reels and they are 100% better
Its quite fiddly to do and there is a knack. The spring wants to fly away and it can be a nightmare to find. Maybe worth tying some very light mono or cotton to it to stop it suddenly leaving your post code.
Mine were from South Coast.
I took the time to smooth off the edges of the spool around where the line clip fits as it felt a little 'edgey'

Tackle box didn't recommend changing the clips on the daiwa emblem X 5000t as they have plastic spools. said to use powergum instead

Ive had these on Emblems for the last 3 years and theyre perfect, they fit the spool with no filing

I think daiwa have finally caught up now.

Without starting another thread, what are peoples opinions on the drag on these, it's going to take a bit of getting used to after my QD'd Ultegras.

Do you recommend leaving as is and getting used to it or getting some speed caps?

I have replaced all four of my line clips with the reel king ones and if I can do it anyone can. Just a thin nose pair of pliers required.

I have not replaced the caps and never had a problem. I just clamp my hand on the spool and tighten up as I am doing it.

These reels are proper work horses and have never let me down.

Not tournies, but the old blue emblem xa.
The drag was about 3.5 to 4 turns from locked to baitrunner, and i tried to like it but it was a faff so I quick dragged them, but not to make them super quick.
They are now 1 full turn from locked to baitrunner so easy to use and i haven't lost the sensitivity in the drag.
I modified mine using the original drag cap.

I did put carbon washers in but not sure it made much difference really. As the drag was smooth anyway.
And when i say quick drag, its not "quick" like some of these really rapid reels that remove all the micro adjustment of a good drag.

100% this, if you are going to mess with the drag on a tourney, just get a different reel in the first place! Other than the drag and looks, they are bloody horrible and yes I do own some

I must be in the minority here I changed the washers and spool caps on my 5000t's some time agao and for me they have been improved. I have just ordered caps and washers for my 6000t's such was the improvement in my opinion.

You can realistically get to a fighting drag setting in a turn or so, they really don't lend themselves to low resistance bait runner type fishing, get infinities for that. Just enough so they don't get dragged in on the take is all you need.
But, I can easily do 2-3 full turns with my index fingertip as quickly as somebody can decipher which of the 4 or 5 clicks of adjustment they are on and probably have about 500% more usable drag range.
QD is the worst thing to happen (outside of marker rod set ups) in a generation

Maybe not on the tournies, but on some of there more modern, less squeaky reels they have proper clips now.

ive fitted custom reel king clips to my tournies and it still damages the line a bit due to the sharp edges of the original hole. like it needs a washer or something over the hole to stop it happening. although not sure the damage is enough for any sort of cut off occuring? any one had experience with this?

A lot of the line clips i see for tourneys are crap. The plastic ones usually have no bevel it seems, so it's a fight getting the line in the clip & that makes it prone to damaging on the rough hole.
I leant from friends problems and bought the future fishing ones which are metal, bevelled, and have a plastic bar that sits inside the spool, just like Shimano clips do. My clip is easy to use, sits straight, and has never caused a cutoff. Yet

these are bevelled but that doesnt stop the line grating on the existing hole. ive just bought some m2(5mm O/D) and m2.5(5.6mm O/D) nylon flat washers. will see what fits best and superglue them over the hole. could be a good fix just to make sure. i dont get why the 6000t ones come with a proper clip yet they still selling these with shark tooth ones!

Which clip did you get, we're they the square section aluminium ones? I found they still kinked the main line so I got a refund on them.


I fitted the round section ali clips and those have been fine. They are not as tight as original clips but this may be more to do with the available space where the old line clip was. I just loop the line the other way around the line clip and then it can't slip out.



I had to file down the sides where the old line clip was fitted to allow the new clip to sit flatter, but it works fine.

They do have movement but I think a small nylon washer with a couple mm hole should do the trick because there is still some damage to line when I'm testing them out and its definitely due to the original hole.

I changed to the 6000's. Just because I prefer a larger reel and crank power. Come with a tapered spool and a proper line clip. 👍

Doesn't the emblem spod reel have a small plastic shield behind the dog tooth line clip? Maybe that's available as a spare?

The retrieve is so much slower than a 5000, Daiwa took their eye off the ball with that one

Makes you feel like you have cast to the moon when you wind in though!

To be honest I've never really noticed a huge difference between the two, maybe because I use 6000T for longer range than 5000T so expect to take longer winding in.

What are the specs?

I know the gearing is different to increase torque on the 6000T. Let's not forget that these were not designed for English still waters, so doubt they were even considering a carp ‘ball' to keep an eye on.

Specs pretty much same I think , extra ball bearing in 6000t and obviously comes with a real line clip. Retrieve I think its 75-80 cm for both, not sure exactly , 5000t is better though

The retrieve is the spec I was talking about. I know the gearing is different but don't know the exact retrieve figures.

Had both 6000T and 5000T for years, wouldn't say one is better than the other but they are better suited to different set ups.
