Bought myself one of these orange bait guns this week. Not used it yet though. Is there a recognised fix for stopping the paste getting behind the plunger?

In all seriousness I would have 100% bought your recommended gun tbf; its just that I'm a DeWalt brand nerd and have been systematically replacing all my domestic tools (electric and petrol - with the exception of my lawn-mower) with DW battery power; also the bloke selling was practically giving it away!
Totally agree with baitmaking being a dying art but a massive edge (I'm amazed Gardner are still producing these product lines) - it is a faff so its understandable why so many cant be bothered - like all things though if you have the right kit it does make life easier and I find it therapeutic these days- its like fishing without going fishing and hikes up the anticipation levels!

I haven't found a decent one yet. I "pump" the plunger back and fore a few times that tends to clump it up and remove the ball every few refills.
I've tried wrapping it in film, tape, tinfoil etc but that all gets torn up and ends up in the sauage.
Massive high five to any one that solves this!

Agree with you totally.
Bait making for me also makes the actual fishing way more fun. I get more "fire" than ever for going fishing from making the bait then wanting to get out and see if its any good.
There's a few things that I think puts people off home baitmaking which is a shame. The online "community" in general for bait making is fairly un-welcoming and unhelpful/secretive... there aren't that many people really helping newcomers on vs guarded or condescending jibes and being sent to roll fishmeal-semo-soya-noflavour baits for 3 seasons to earn their stripes.
There's more money and therefore better marketing in commerical bait than the homerolling too so it doesn't get the same alure for younger gen s.
There are some people having a go for sure though as well as JB but you are right, there's no huge flag flying.
CarpChronicles/Opti Sam is having a crack, the Bait club stuff has some great info.
TCarper's writings are always good and some really different stuff coming from him.
People are so careful though as internet bait making isn't a friendly place if toes feel they are being trodden on.

It's never bothered me. The large cork in our mixes tends to clog the expansion gaps far more than mixes without cork like your pure base mix, so it does not really happen as bad for us..... If it bothers you, just remove the metal tube, Alraldite said expansion gaps on the plunger (those slits). I am sure that will resolve that in an instant.

I could show you EXACTLY what goes into all of our baits.... You still would not be able to replicate them, not unless you knew what our 'curing' process is. What that achieves, and why. The sum of the parts, is not the total after they have been through the process.
The process that the hook baits go through, is far, far more important than any one base ingredient. Unless you knew the exact stages of production, the when's, and the why's... It would all be completely useless to you. You would just replicate what everyone else is doing who have followed us.
If someone wanted to offer me the right amount for the business.... I'll show them the when's and the why's, the what for's... & walk away into the sunset. Carp fishing would never hear from me again. They can go and take over carp fishing bait for themselves.

Got the photos through from work this morning. That is the two different types of battery together. You can see that the 'shoe' on the newer gun is much deeper than the shoe on the older gun. If you zoom in on the batteries, the attachments are very different.
The black batteries on the right from Amazon you can see have no hole on top to attach the charger, like the older grey one does. The battery that comes with the newer gun does. So if you purchase spare batteries from Amazon, you will need to purchase a charger to charge them, as the charger that comes with the gun will not. When you purchase your charger (tenner), it will also charge your battery that comes with the gun.

Thanks Vossy, but i'm just going to stock up on the newer type guns. We make a lot of money from those guns, so it's no biggie. The newer type also run a lot quieter than the older type. The gearing system inside the gun has also been turned down, which makes them better too in my eyes. They also have a fixed plunger, rather than a screw off plunger. That screw really winds me up, as every time you screw the tube off the gun to clean, it unscrews the plunger too. No amount of glue/resin stops this either.
I already have four spares on top of a wardrobe of the new type, I will be purchasing more. When the old type batteries, on the older gun eventually die.... They will all be replaced by the newer type guns.
You will have the new type battery. Get yourself a spare from Amazon for a score.
The grey battery in the photo below is now many many years old. It was used all day, everyday, for years. It still works now. But it finally does not hold more than about four guns worth of charge. In a home bait rolling situation those batteries will literally last forever. You can buy spares for the newer type batteries going up to 5ah, but these are heavier. The batteries in the photos that come with the guns are 2ah.

My original still works fine but when I got it I thought it looked like a Dewalt battery. Any Dewalt users on here that can see if they have a battery that looks the same as the grey one on the left in message 116? It would be handy to know as I am sure one day it will die.

I found those ones on Amazon Smurf, by just comparing photos online of the battery attachments. I found some VERY similar to the old type you have, but instead of five slits where the battery clips on they had six. Apart from that they were totally identical. I did not purchase one to try, but with Amazon you can just send it back if it does not fit. Try it mate.
I also only looked on Amazon. I'm certain if you were to scour Temu, or the other Chinese sites you will find them for certain straight away. They are only Chinese lithium batteries and must be pretty standard.
The other option will be to contact the eBay seller. He had spare batteries for the old ones before, Baitman contacted him £30 he wanted. Send him a message & see if he has any of the old type batteries left. Bet he does. I would send a photo of the type of battery that you have in the message if I was you just so he understands properly what one you have. But it has to be worth a try.

Grey one does look v similar to DW; however the forming around the 5x linear slots (the bit where you locate and slide onto tool) on the grey one is different (they protrude) to those on 18V DW battery pack which are chamfered.

I will be trying out my battery caulk gun this weekend I have bought a Garner green bait gun plug for a standby any tips with using them cheers
