Has anyone used a large eye swivel over a ring swivel for a Chod rig? I can see it looking neater and lower but would you loose too much movement loosing the ring or am I just over thinking it? I really favour short chods and it just got me thinking

Not used a large eye swivel myself, A large eye swivel will never be as smooth as say... a ESP high performance Ring swivel which will be as free revolving/spinning as possible and work at it's best.
Chods were never really designed to fish really low, personally I think you lose the 'curve' benefit of the stiff bristle between hook and swivel.

Cheers dude, yeah I was thinking you would loose a bit of movement if you do actually fish them in the Chod. 1 of those things that work in your head and would probably look great in the margin just not as practical as the tried and tested method 👍

Do what I would do. You could always set up 2 rigs, one on the ring swivel, the other on the large eye swivel and test them with a decent pop up on, in a sink bowl or in any shallow margins, and touch the hooklink, inside/outside of curved section and see what it acts like.
Sometimes after doing tests, you may have a 'lightbulb' moment and change something to suit what you want it to act like, or even better be lucky enough to see a fish feed in the margins or pick up a hookbait. real world testing. You're idea with the large eye swivel may be better on your venue/s ... you never know!

Imo the biggest flaw of the chod is that lack of vertical movement when mr carp sucks/blows during feeding. I reckon a big eye swivel makes that worse. I tend to use those Thinking Anglers double ring swivels, or even a tiny 1" boom in an attempt to get round the problem.

Yeah it definitely would limit the vertical movement, to me that doesn’t overly bother me as I fish it straight through on fluorocarbon so in my head that would fly up easier than if on leadcore/leader. I was just thinking it might look and sit a little neater. I just couldn’t find any pictures or articles without it being on a ring swivel

Yup I tried them for a couple of sessions and blanked when I felt like I should have caught. I then tested both versions in a bucket and instantly ditched the large eyed swivels.
Obviously I've no actual proof that it makes a difference, but I didn't want to risk it.

Fox Stiff Rig Beaked Hook / Korda Mouthtrap 25lb / Thinking Anglers Crook Bead / Korda Pop Up Weight / Leadcore.
Not much upwards movement here but it's caught me loads of good fish.

I use a split ring or Gardner Q ring on the fluro or leadcore leader respectively (Q ring is easier but gets stuck on naked chod beads), then a ring swivel with the chod tied to the ring. Ends up as a double ring swivel with the QR aspect but stronger (still get nervous with crook type swivels...silly I know but I can't help it).
Gives a cm or so to suck up and also negates the need for the pukka ESP swivels as all the rings give plenty of freedom to spin.

The Q rings are really good, fine with leadcore / leadfree and a normal bead, much easier to take the swivel on and off than a normal split ring. It's just that the Q bit seem to get stuck on the cone shaped protective bit on the naked chod leader beads I like to use - would no doubt still fly off and up the line on hitting the water but can't be certain...
Not that easy to find suitable black / dull normal split rings, but they do exist - Decoy lure brand I think.
