I've just watched John's latest video during which John explains that D.M. P. T .is now a banned substance, and is known to be a carcinogen. I just thought this information needs to be brought to the attention of a wider audience.

Its been banned from animal feed for many years now but was always OK in 'lures' which for us is the hook bait (see EU 1831/2003). Since early September there are some new restrictions under UK REACH where it is a listed chemical now. As it is now reclassified as Carc 1B then in business use further practices are needed to handle it (COSHH. etc).

It does make me chuckle that its now classed as 'Harmful to aquatic life...' when one source in nature is algae!

As with may things a tiny amount used in a 'lure' is still considered OK when used as a hobby bait maker as COSHH isn't infourced in the home. You can still buy it from UK bait companies although they do state to take suitable precautions i.e. do not inhale, ingest etc and to only use in hook baits.

Personally never used it and don't see the need to try now.

Finally, burnt toast is a known carcinogen but as you are not forced to eat it at work it's not under COSHH rules. A lot of the banned stuff is for bigger uses like fish farmers not Jonny Smith in his bait shed making a couple of pots of hook baits every 6 months. If you want to see how stupid it could get look into 'Proposition 65' law in California. Google 'proposition 65 disneyland' to see how crazy the world can get over potential carcinogens

Indeed Peter,

It seems very strange that a substance known to occur in many freshwater and seawater organisms, including algae, krill, molluscs and fish, should be a danger to the very creatures that contain it in Nature. Perhaps krill should be banned from baits!

See: A New Feeding Attractant, Dimethyl-beta-propiothetin, for Freshwater Fish by Nakajima, Uchida & Ishida, 1989.

I can't find any documents where it states that DMPT ( Dimethyl propeothetin ) as used as a fish attractant has been reclassified . They're is another DMPT ( N,N - Dimethyl - p - toluidine ) which was re classified as a class 1 b carcinogen on Sep 1 st. It's used as a curing agent in adhesives and any products containing this at over 1 % are now for professional use only. As all the bait companies are still selling DMPT I'm wondering if there's been a case of mistaken identity ?

I see what you mean, these warnings can be taken to ridiculous lengths. However people should be wary of handling DMPT and breathing it in.

I don't know about the british situation, but here in europe it's not banned, but instead not permitted. Meaning no research has been done to get it approved. It's not like tests have been done and it's deemed unsafe or what have you, it's just that the spirit of the animal feed laws are such that everything is banned unless it's approved, which for instance is completely contrary to us laws for animal feed.

That's exactly the same experience I had with this stuff.

After few trials I found it useless and I don't even finished the pot I bought at the time.
