Family holiday to France next week and the site we staying on has a couple of lakes. Obviously I'm taking my rods but thought I might have a go at float fishing for them whilst I'm there. Never done it before and fish go up to mid 30s so what sort of tackle should I be looking at? Thanks

If it were me, I'd take a 2lb TC 90's carp rod or modern barbel rod, small ish reel with floating braid, a distance controller and 11lb Reflo match hook length for the 6' hook link to a size 10 Mixa or barbel hook.
For bait use bread if close, or mixers via catapult or Spomb. Glug the mixers in the cheapest vegetable oil to create flatspot.
If feeling rich, add Squid Goo to the hook bait. Expensive but works on the top

In my experience surface fishing in France can be very hit and miss . . .could be mistaken but I'm sure they're fed sinking rather than floating pellets as babies and therefore generally don't recognise floating baits . . . . .either that or I'm just poor at floater fishing!

At the Carpforum La Botte trip in 2005, one of the guys running it said he'd give us a free holiday if we caught one off the top (tongue in cheek but he had nothing to worry about anyway!). It was red hot all week, we were feeding baits towards groups of fish milling around in a corner and not one was interested.

Took kizzis advice below with a 2lb barbel rod and controller float, had some great sport with a few fish off the surface, best so far a 19lb grass carp.
