Is there any way to reduce the speed of a quick drag?
Recently got some Castizm and Okuma Obsidian but the drag on both are a little too fast.
I spoke to a couple of reel modification companies who said I would potentially need to swap out one of the washers on either reel for a felt washer but I thought the drag speed was controlled by the bush / spring under the spool cap?

On some old daiwa big pits i did the exact thing, removing the spring, and the drag is perfect now, can balance the tension delicately. It changes free run to fighting from 1/2-3/4 turn to 3 turns or thereabouts and no downsides like a lesser working drag or friction. I don't know how it is with newer models, but same principle should apply?

I have done a qd conversion on several old daiwas and my old shimano ultegras.
I swapped the spring for a solid nylon spacer, and also left the felt washers in.
It's about 3/4 of a turn from locked to baitrunner type tension, and it works perfectly.
Another thing to do is to wash the felt washers to completely degrease them as the often they will be full of old thick grease.
Once fully washed out, rinsed and dried you can then reassemble and add some 3in1 oil to help lube them and prevent stickiness.
This also allows some compression of the felt washers.

The speed of the drag is controlled and can be adjusted by both or either the washers and spring strength or solid bush in the cap.
Changing a solid washer for a felt washer will slow the drag down and obviously the more you swap out the slower it will get.

Pack of multicoloured felt discs of the same or similar diameter off Ebay, a hole punch for the centre hole and a smidging of Eel Slime PTFE drag grease. Done this two years ago with my Daiwa QDs which had a horribly fast drag. They are now still smooth as silk but with a much greater adjustable drag range. Don't pay silly money for a couple of square inches of felt. Someone is being very naughty 😂

Eel slime would be better than 3in1?
I've been trying to find suitable felt discs on ebay but the only fishing ones I can find are shimano and limited range of sizes, all others seem to mostly be either polishing discs which look way too thick or ones that are for vacuum cleaners, they look better but they don't state a thickness so unsure if they would be any good.

I'd opt for the grease, as it's more viscous and less likely to get washed out should your reels get a good dunking. In actual use though, it probably doesn't make much difference. The felt discs that I bought weren't fishing branded ones, they are multicoloured discs of craft felt ! They cost around £ 2.50 for 50 and I then bought a 10mm steel punch for the centre hole. I got the 25 mm diameter ones and they are 1 mm thick. A smidge of grease and the jobs a good un ! I'll add that I always fish with a tight clutch and rarely concede line via the clutch when playing fish, preferring to back wind. As long as your not targeting 300 lb marlin you'll be fine !

Sorry to bump this thread but I am trying to slow down drag on my Okuma T-Rexes. Problem is they do not have a spring in spool cap, only a nut that threads onto the shaft. Any ideas?

Remove one (or more) of the drag washers in the spool, the stack will be less packed and you'll have to turn the spool cap further to compress it
EDIT, maintain the stack order, metal/washer/metal/washer, etc or whatever it is in those spools. Or you could buy thinner drag washers and maintain the stack, choices choices!

Thank you for response. Washers are felt, probably 1mm thin so I am not sure I could go any thinner x) Carbontex is not compressible so that's out of question I guess

On second thoughts, I'd hold fire until some one confirms as I might be getting confused with advice re lowering my spool cap after fitting thicker carbon tex washers 👍
Edit, Fed up of the waffle of the ITV pundits, went to check my notes, defo not right, referring to 3 different types of carbon washers on my reels. As the carbon washers aren't compressible (within reason) removing or adding won't do much tot the quickness of the drag.
If I'm thinking right you need more compressible material not less, as I said someone will confirm.

Yes, more compressible. With carbon ones it would got from free to locked in much less travel of cap. I was thinking of removing original washer, making my own from felt and playing with different viscosity grease or so but cannot find real, wool, felt easily

I see someone used synthetic felt for washers and they worked fine. I can source those and will play around with them. Thank you. I ordered some full grain leather from Temu so will play with that as well
