Hi , currently in the market for some new Shimano reels . Iv had Shimano ultegra xtd 14000 since there release. They have been brilliant but Iv abused them and I'm ready for an upgrade .
The two I'm looking at are the new ultegra's and also the power aero's both in 14000. I'm trying to figure out if it's worth paying the extra for the power aero's.
Anyone with a bit of knowledge on these reeks add any imput ?
These will be used for anything from small canals to big casting and also potentially large public waters in France

The aero is made from aluminium (rather than c14 composite of the ultegra) and has 8 bearings rather than 5.
They are similar in weight.
I guess is it worth paying around £100 extra per real ?

I looked at the weight difference and it wasn't much at all , 10g I think

With you saying your xtds are a bit worn I guess that's in reference to paint chips ?
I wonder what the c14s and aluminums body are like with their paint - just with all black a few chips I can imagine they don't look good

Hi pal , no aesthetically I'm really not concerned . Mechanically they are battered
I just want the best reel for the money , I'm glad the new reels look good but my main concern is functionality . Looking at them again it's hard to determine whether the power aero is going to be much better than the ultegra , I'm also looking at the XR model which is closer in price to the aero's

I use the new power aero but got them at a really good discounted price from Germany. They are by far the best reel I have ever had but i am a bit of a dinosaur when it comes to new gear especially reels having upgraded from infinity X 5500 BR's. They are completely solid, reaaly light and extremely smooth. I know it won't help you much in your decision choice but without question I have no regrets and would buy them again. Might be hard to find a person that has had both to do a comparison.

Hi, was in Johnson ross asking after the ultrega's. The guy recommended the ultegra XR over the power aero as the difference in reel is small and not justified with the extra cost. Gave the power aero a spin (limited I know) but they did not feel at all balanced and there was a significant wobble from the rotor as it span. I already have the ultegra xte and like them a lot but after viewing the above I bought the Okuma obsidian for my long range rods as they felt really nice compared to the shimanos and were significantly cheaper.

Interesting, not what I would expect at all to be honest .
Iv managed to get the price down a bit on the power aeros so not that much more than the XR's now .

I have no doubt you felt a rotor wobble on the power aero at Johnson ross but all I can say is my 3 are solid. I do a lot of distance fishing. They get used every sesh. Smooth as butter and for the moment I have had fish to 48lb on them (3rd 40 so far). I could only recommend. If they are worth the difference in price I am not sure but they are solid reels which you won't be upset about. Would love to try the XR to see how it compares.

If your not bothered about it having to be marketed as a carp reel do yourself a favour and get a Penn tidal xt in your hands . If I were still fishing big pits/venues I'd use these over the tchnium mgs I had. They are a third of the price, extremely smooth ,have a good drag and feel superb. They also come with a spare spool and feel like they will last and take some abuse. Not super light weight but then I don't really care about that anyway.

If your not bothered about cost ignore the penns you get what you pay for as they are not in the same league in either performance or durability .The best always comes at a price whatever the product and many big pit reels are not actually fit for purpose unless using for light work which makes big pits pointless to start with .Worst i have seen was a pal in france with 3 supposed top wychworth big pits all 3 reels gears and spindles were goosed on the first day doing boat work

For me it's about spare part availability, I'm sure you can get them for Penn reels but I know with Shimano I can just send them for a service and the parts will be available there and then.

After all this time are you still talking the same absolute bullshine,the penn are quality and so are the okuma obsidians.The shimano reels in the same price bracket are not even close to the quality of the other reels,If I was buying new reels now I would have either of them and spend the huge saving on bait.I have the latest tech mgs,I love them but after using the obsidians the difference in cost is 100% definitely not worth it
