Hi all,

My dad and I have Daiwa 12ft rods 2.75tc that are about 30+ years old and we think we may be due an upgrade as we struggle to get the distance we need on the bigger lake we fish.

We are a bit overwhelmed by the choice out there and don't really know where to start.

Can anyone give us some recommendations or info on what to look out for please?

Not looking to spend mega bucks.

Any help is muchly appreciated

Free spirit hi s I've er are prob one of best on market you can put a lead anywhere and nice under tip

It may be worth giving an idea of the budget you have as otherwise you will get typical recommendations of Free Spirit, Harrison etc. As you state there is a huge selection of rods out there and from experience you can get good rods at each price point so just depends on what you will use them for (type of fishing, casting distance, size of fish targeting etc) as to which meets your needs best

We're thinking of going to 3 rods so budget would probably be up to £100 or so per rod.

At the moment we fish a couple of club lakes that are 6 and 12 acres. We've always fished pretty simple with lead clip system and bottom bait but we are trying to do spombing and PVA bags now too. Fish are up to 40lbs but we'd also like to go to France at some point in search of some monsters lol.

In terms of casting distance, we struggle to get to 15 wraps to be honest and would definitely like something that'd help get us further. May need some coaching too lol.

At £100 per rod I would be looking second hand maybe free spirit ctx or Harrison ballistas would be my thinking

I seem to remember the Shimano Tribal rods getting a good rec, was it the TX2? Might be worth doing a search of the forum as around your price point 👍

2nd hand could be a good shout otherwise for new I would suggest trying to have a look at the Shimano TX2, Korda Kaizen Green, Tackle Box CFX (not sure if they are in or just outside budget) and the Sonik offerings. I would suggest looking at either 3 or 3.25lb tc rods as a decent all round tc that will help with the casting but not being too stiff

I've got a set and while not high grade fittings they're worth a punt at the price.
