I know, another rod thread!
My step-son is wanting his first 3 rod set up for Christmas, budget for rods is anywhere up to £90 per rod. Generally fishes small to medium lakes with the odd trip to a bigger venue.
All suggestions welcome.

Free Spirit Helical . . .Shimano TX2 . . .
Never waggled a Helical but am assuming they're not far from a CTX - on this basis the action may be preferable / more forgiving for a young lad over a TX2 which are def stiffer / more tippy . .
Saying that AD have some 12' TX2 full cork 2.75tc for under £80ea - that TC may be a better compromise with this rod as well as being a bargain!

Future fishing custom daiwa powermesh in 3.25. Future fishing have unfortunately gone now but Bristol angling seem to have taken their stock of rods.

I had the 10ft 2.75 tx2 and loved them, the test curve may be under rated a bit but they are great rods for the money.

Agree - for the £ I don't think they're over-rated . . .the build is better than a lot of the lower price point rods and whilst they are overgunned for the tc (I have a pair of 12' 3.25 and they can chuck) they're a good tool . . .I would imagine the 12' 2.75 would be an excellent starter rod / allrounder

Even the TX-2 12 2.75 is incredibly stiff, they are overrated, good for people who have never had a decent rod, Sonik VaderX RS / Daiwa are already a much better choice, or get a pair off GT2 50 the are cheap now, Nash X Series is also decent.

Sonik make decent budget rods, depending whether he wants 10ft or 12ft, for 10ft xtractors are very capable rods or if he wants 12ft total fishing tackle are doing dominator rods cheap as chips, also carpology gave the daiwa vertice the award for best budget rods.

I would buy used rods.
Plenty of bargains out there within your budget.
My choice would be Harrison Chimeras; 12ft 2.75 first choice, 3lb next, then 2.5.
I own pairs of all 3 and all were very cheap and are superb rods.

Think your talking rubbish - I own loads of rods; most if not all of them 'decent' (Harrison / Freespirit / Drennan Acolyte) in varying sizes / tc's / lengths / applications - some are customs others off the shelf . . . and the pair of 12' 3.25 TX2s (the cheapest rods I own) are decent enough for what I use them for (solely Beachcaster Floater Fishing) however I have also used them on day ticket lakes and they make awesome casting machines . . .they are well made and a decent price point so whats not decent about that?

Unless he's going to be casting miles, don't go overboard on the TC.
He'll get far more enjoyment with a lighter, bendier Rod.
In saying that alot of these new, younger guys, tend to go with the trend which is high TC Rods, in which case he might turn round disappointed and say "but I wanted a more powerful rod"

If hes young he going to want to cast it - rod also needs to be able to handle PVA bags so a floppy one (whilst more enjoyable to play fish on) might be a bit limiting . . .hence TX2 2.75 recommendation!
