Anyone used one long term? My spod reel is on the way out

Personally, I'd buy a reel from a company that makes them themselves. Not from a company that cant get a bag stem right. Daiwa, shimano, Penn, okuma etc.
I've always used daiwa spod reels and they are great, very robust

I had the aerlex spod and it was ok. Got the later shimano one now and its getting a bit rough now. Might have to try the new daiwa offering. What drew me to the Avid one was really high retrieval rate. I probably fish 8 or 9 nights a month and spod often

Daiwa spod reel with see you right, especially as you use it a fair bit

TFT have the Penn Affinity 8000 spod reel on offer at £70 which has 120cm retrieval.
It doesn't state the weight though as this may be a factor.

I've got the daiwa emblem spod and also and also the Penn - Affinity III Spod Reel - 8000 Longcast, the latter is heavier but it's build like a tank and I would say it's probably much tougher.
Weight doesn't bother me , I guess if your lightly built - said person might find it challenging to use for any long period of time.
For me I'd stick with daiwa or penn.

Are they still available? I bought 2 when they first came out because of the weight but they were awful. Line lay was rubbish(gap at the top and bottom of the spool,). For some reason the handle always spun round when I was about to cast, I think there was no counter weight inside. Went back to the Daiwa's, quite heavy but fairly bullet proof.

I had the avid spod reel and the gears inside broke , terrible reels , would not recommend them mate , cheap rubbish

I have one too and the gears are about shot after a handful of sessions. Very hard to reel in an empty x spod.
Absolute garbage, one of my worst buys.
Think I will try the Daiwa Super Spod...

Don't do what I did and buy a load of cheap spod reels do yourself a favour and buy the daiwa spod reel absolutely brilliant bit of kit

That offer went down To £50 for the penn 8000. Currently £53 on eBay from tft.

I have used 2 penn affinity 3 7000 as spod reels in the past both have started to seize i don't know if the actual spod reel has different internals or any other changes apart from being bigger. The first i used for 6 months it's pretty much seized solid and I replaced that with a ultregra spod xte for 18 months still full functional but is definitely not as smooth, then i broke that (my own stupidity broke the reel foot off the body) whilst waiting for parts I used a different affinity 7000 and after 6 or so weeks that feels like it's starting to seize and feels tighter reeling in. Just my 2 cents and what I found, i would recommend the ultregra xte spod.

Interesting. I have been using a normal 7000ltd for marker and baiting for the last couple of years. I don't spod much but cast pva bags over each rod. Maybe half a dozen on each. And while the reels need a dollop of oil and grease every few months they are still going strong. I bought the 8000 spod as it was cheaper than a secondhand 7000. Hopefully it will be ok.
