As above, I'm looking to waterproof my tempest and probably my jacket aswell ,what would you guys recommend using ?

Yep - Nikwax and Fabsil are what you want.
For your jacket they do the tech wash as well as the TX direct. Follow the instructions though, i.e. clean out the detergent drawer and do a couple of rinse runs with an empty machine. If you try to wash your jacket with normal washing detergent and softener you''ll likely ruin your jacket.
With the Fabsil for the tempest (or any shelter for that matter), get yourself one of those hand spray pumps for watering house plants. Doesnt have to be an expensive one - makes the job a breeze - just set your shelter up on a dry day, hose it down to get any mud off etc and let it dry fully. Then just spray the fabsil on until it's all soaked and leave it to dry. Fabsil is essentially silicon dissolved in a solvent, the silicon and solvent soaks into the fabric and the solvent evaporates leaving the silicon impregnated in the fabric. Once its dry it'll bead off like water off a ducks back

I done my tempest when I was fishing in the warmer months,used an old plastic tub a paint brush and fabsil gold and while rods were out I waterproofed it,got some funny looks and comments but let it dry in the sun after and I found a hole in mine so put a puncture outfit over it and then the skull cap went over it and it's as good as new.
I've got and slx 2 man that needs doing but only use that when it goes colder

Cheers for the reply guys,the jacket I have is a Mil-Tec Wet Weather Trilaminate Jacket,I might just take a risk with the fabsil on the jacket as I can't afford both at the moment

I used fabsil on a gortex jacket over the summer and it worked fine. Also worked on my dogs CA coat
I have used on a bivvy in the past and was good - i would most likely just buy the spray cans now for ease of use.
Hardest part if getting a warm dry day at the moment

Goretex and the like are a permeable membrane which allows it to breath, while Fabsil will probably waterproof it, it will also probably block it with the silicone and stop it from breathing (if that's important to you).
I'm sure Gerry has posted in depth on the subject from memory. I think nikwax do a product specifically for Goretex types.
