Hello all,
I'd love to go and take a look at some of the famous lakes. Having read all of the works of Hearn, Lane, Hutchy etc over the years, it would be great to just stand on the banks of some of those famous lakes and get the feel of them. Do any of you know whether it's possible to visit Savay/ The Mere/ Wraysbury/ Horton Church/ Yateley etc just for a look? I don't want to be a nuisance to any of the anglers who are there of course.

As most are syndicate I highly doubt many would let you through the gates.
However,
I think the mere is an open access water as it's known for bird watching.
Some of the yately lakes are day ticket so you could get access that way ??

Thanks for the reply. I'm very tempted by The Mere. It's probably one of the most special having read about what people put themselves through just to fish there, let alone catch. I know it's devoid of life now but I still reckon it would be an atmospheric place.

You'd probably at the right time of year be able to see Parts of Savay from the grand Union canal towpath that runs downs one side. The Mere you'd obviously have to know how to gain access. As for the others gated syndicates now.

Could just have a look at savvy if you put on a hi viz and a hard hat and boots and say working on hs2..

Not having read any book about any Mere, which one is it, not Carls secret Lake

Colne Mere, that's correct. From everything I've read, it must be possible to get to the “birdwatching bank” relatively easily because the birdwatchers/ dog walkers/ EA bailiffs etc all got there easily enough. Doing a lap is impossible without a suit of armour and a strimmer but I only really want to take a look so one bank is enough for me.

Looking at Savay is a definite no unless you push your face to the mesh on the road bank or the canal.

Very little to see of Savay from the GUC. Its pretty densely wooded between the towpath and the lake......little glimpses at best.
