I read somewhere that the test curve on 9 and 10 ft rods isn't comparable to 12 ft rods but can't find it and with so much choice I was wondering is a 2.75 or 3.25 10ft 'softer' than the same tc on a 12 ft rod or would they be stiffer?
I guess what I'm after knowing is with shorter rods should I go up, go down or stay the same tc for a similar fishing experience?

To me, TC is independent of length, its the force required to bend the tip 90 deg to the butt.
I'm guessing the rod has to load faster than a longer rod due to its shorter length which is unavoidable. The playing action is what you're after rather than TC, bit like comparing a 2.75 Torrix to Acurix, totally different action but same TC

Yes thanks re rod styles. I'm using tc's as a guide to get an idea of how they act and then finding somewhere with stock, very few tackle shops seem carry a wide collection of tc's and none near Portsmouth.
So (for example) a 3lb tc hi s, s, or e in 10ft will act the same as a 12ft from the same family or should I looks at 3.25 or 2.75

Test curve and action aren't linked, you can get higher tc soft rods , and lower tc stiffer rods. The same goes for the length.

So the rod's characteristics (action, etc) don't change just a mini version of the same?

Yes, a range will probably have started life as developing the best TC which will sell in market and that rod might excel. Problem is market will want other TCS in that range and while Id like to think some companies might thoroughly test all of them, I'm not so sure. So rods within a range can be very different.
It seems especially prevalent in fly fishing where you may have 10+ rods in a range but only 1 or 2 are reviewed as the 'sweet spot'.

If you were to compare a 12ft rod and a 10ft rod of exactly the same test curve and action then you'd find the 12ft rod softer and the 10ft rod more pokey.
The 12fter has more length to smooth out the curve of the tip and the 10fter feeling much more stiff.

That's kind of what I thought would be the case - so maybe drop 1 or 2 tc's down from what it would be on a 12ft rod?

Don't understand the need for all short rods to have such a high test curve. Have some 2.75lb scopes and they are as stiff as i'd like to go.
