I was thinking of 10lb to 20llb shock leader for distance has anyone got any advise what would be the best combination I was thinking of 8llb but thought it was to light

Depends where you are fishing, any weed ,or gravel bars, or mussel beds. Or just plain old mental fish. Don't risk losing them just so you can hook them.

Considering that you are contemplating using 8lb mainline, then I guess you are fishing a lake with absolutely no weed, snags, no anglers around you, just absolutely .....nothing, and fish up to 8 lb ?

The "fish up to 8lb" comment makes absolutely no sense whatsoever.
Neither does the "no other anglers around you", he'll be using a shock leader.

What range do you need to be fishing?
I wouldn't personally feel happy using low diameter mono at range, but I fish weedy gravel pits.
Have you tried improving your casting with a lesson? Or beefier casting rods so that you can get away with heavier line?
Can you use braid?

You don't need to be casting with low-breaking strain lines nowadays. I use a 12lb subline, which breaks at just under 18lb, I use 13ft free spirit CTX 3,5lb tc and cast straight through with 4oz leads and cant get it to crack off hitting 150 yards plus.
As others have said, look at your technique and your gear. Don't risk losing fish, and fish smarter and heavier.

When I started over 40 years ago 8llb line was the go to line I was friendly with a big name angler one of carp fishing trail blazers who would only use 8llb or even 6llb line which I learnt a lot from OG knows him
My rods and casting is ok I haven't fished at distance since the 80s been fishing puddles now going on a big water so looking for some sensible up to date advice

10lb syncro is as low as I'd go. Fished a big weed pit last year and didn't have any frays or snap offs once. And had some really good fights.
And it's good at range. Fished it upto 170s

8lb Sylcast was the line i was using "back in the day" but then I was using 1.75lb rods and 1.5-2oz leads .... they did fly though
