Did this on another forum years ago but thought it might be interesting to ask again.
Is there anything to prove carp can get focused on something so much it bordered on addiction? I don't mean something like a mineral they need but something they can be after constantly akin to something us humans can be

Don't know about proof but there were certainly waters where the carp became addicted or pre occupied on peanuts, to the detriment of their health

Or is that because said waters had anglers who were predominantly using peanuts? I bet on a lake with a rich ecosystem with a good larder of naturals, you would see no difference in the health of the stock, but because most of the anglers are using peanuts, and are catching on them, they would presume that the lake is a peanut addicted water?

Surely that would/ could only be said if you are catching fish on peanuts, which were previously uncatchable.

At the time on those waters the fish ignored all other baits.
So were the fish addicted ? who knows I was just replying with an example to the OP where carp's behaviour appeared to be an addiction

According to a certain podcast, red pescaviva sweetcorn
I've never seen them addicted to something but i have seen them totally and utterly preoccupied on hemp quite a few times, to the extent that for at least 48 hours, they wouldn't touch anything else

NO I dont think in a million years a fish would get addicted
but if your talking about/meaning pre occupied ? YES 100% BUT its only ever temporary and often only happens it seems at certain times of the year too
another thing SIZE they can get pre occupied a classic example I found a French lake off the radar and allowed to be ONLY fished by the local French residents
lucky for me my French G/F Sister lived in a house that backed onto the lake and she could get permits for any family to fish it so said I was her brother in law and got me a permit
I did a week on it and while people either side were catching well by day 4 I was blanking in style !
then one of the locals came and said here use these I am going home they were the smallest tiger nuts I had ever seen most less than the size of a pea !!
he explained we French cant come here every week /day and buy expensive boilies so we all fish and bait with these very inexpensive mini tigers I tried some had 3 fish that afternoon and caught well the remainder of the week
my take on it there was so much going in for so long the fish treated it like it was a natural food source and were preoccupied with them it would take regular baiting with boilies over a fair few weeks to get them off it but you would fish will eat ANYTHING
and I do know there are a few baits that have natural attractors and do produce results without education
