As its that time of year, what have you found to be the best and/or the most effective way of preventing these critters from feasting on you.
bin citronella off and buy a thermacell that sits on top of a gas bottle.

Not everyone gets on with it, and some places it just doesn't work but try Original Avon Skin So Soft.

100% deet was the only thing that gave you a chance on a club water I used to fish. They were like flying hyperdermic needles there! Avon skin so soft and jungle formula they were immune to and I even think attracted them.
The downside with highly concentrated deet is it stings like hell in any cuts, you don't want it anywhere near your baits and it will melt your sleeping bag lol

I used to use this until they changed the formula two years ago.It does,nt work with the midges here in south west scotland .It used to . They took out the citronella i believe. Smidge is now used both by myself, forest workers, and the british forces.

Smidge did you say? I've used Skin So Soft for years, my old bottle ran out so used a more recent one at Ashmead this weekend and I've been destroyed (had to go to the pharmacy as had a few bad reactions) so need to get something else to use

Agreed the Avon stuff was great but somthing changed a few years back and its no where near as effective now.
Thermacell for me... worth the money and cost of refill's, i get battered by mozzi's no matter where i go and this is the only thing that ever 100% worked for me. They only last 6-8 hours but i just set my alarm on my phone for when they run out in the night and also use it to force me to watch the lake for a bit... so even helps my angling

Yes mate try smidge . I live in glentrool in the galloway forest which is the midge capital of scotland and everyone uses it here.I have a few old stock skin so soft but now use smidge.

Its ONLY the marines in Scotland that buy it as apparently its the best thing for Midges
thats why most of the Scottish fly fishing shops stock it too I heard
but its now shyte at deterring mozzies but still works for midges ! since they changed the formula a few years ago its pants for mozzies
couple of things
Mozzie coils based on Geranium oil super and no nasty dangerous chemicals like the shyte that are normally sold I always buy a carrybag full everytime I go to a French super market
best insect repellent spray you can buy IMO is incognito mosquito repellent I have used this in France Germany Greece Spain Turkey Thailand,and Philippines to name a few and TRUST ME I DIDNT GET BIT !! only thing you do need to re apply every 4 to 5 hours

Avon skin so soft for me although I bought 8 bottles on offer about 4 years ago,I used to suffer really bad with mozzie bites and Avon skin so soft was my saviour! I've watched big mozzies land on me and fly off straight away it's brilliant stuff ! I've just looked and it seems to be in a new design bottle now
it was the jo joba oil (spelling) that was in the original formula that made it so good
