Hi everyone.

As I live right down on the south coast its easier for me to travel to France
from Portsmouth using Brittany Ferries.

Any codes or vouchers out there to save some pennies??

Thanks.

I don't know about Portsmouth, but Brittany Ferries from Plymouth won't give you the steam from the chimneys, because they're a monopoly with no competition. I expect it's likely to be the same at Portsmouth - are there any other firms sailing out of there which may make a difference.

No other companies sail out of Portsmouth.

The OP is looking for a code from a club member I suspect.

Outside of Covid - I go to France for family holiday every year - and at least one fishing trip per year (since 2010). Last number of years, for family holiday, we've gone via Portsmouth to Caen, the 5 hour crossing, or Portsmouth to Le Havre on the vomit comet, when it was up and running (summer only). So - I have a decent view of likely costs.

I started pricing up our crossing this year for family holiday from Portsmouth to Caen - and it was astronomical - £810 - for 5 people in my car (SUV) - and that was with a 10% discount code from the owner of the gites we're staying at. So call it £900 gross cost.

My Mrs is a teacher, so we always get smashed, price-wise, but last year we got the same crossing for around £600 (which stung).

I then looked at Newhaven to Dieppe for our family holiday - a crossing I've used a lot for fishing trips - and is usually the "cheap option". This year - much more expensive than normal - around £600 (although it's not a fair comparison - as we use this crossing outside of school holidays normally).

Ended up booking Eurotunnel at £340 return - by far the cheapest option - although we didn't look at Dover to Calais ferries.

Moral of the story, I'm surmising, is that the ferry companies are trying to recoup lost revenue from Covid - and hammering families travelling for their summer holidays. The prices have gone up this year by 50% +.

Ouch. I go across on the Portsmouth to Caen route (used to go Le Havre when it ran) and never had to pay anywhere near that. Going end of April, in my 7 seater, with a roof box and 2 passengers for £340 return. I appreciate it does go up in the summer months, but last year I think it was c.£400 for the same car and passengers when we went in August

Hi Daffy, If you know someone has a booked as a BF club member they can give you a guest code which will give you a discount. Our group for many years used the Portsmouth - St Malo route out and the Caen - Portsmouth on the way back as it suited our needs. Brittany seem to be increasing the cost year on year and a couple of years ago introduced height checks on cars with small roof boxes. I was advised I was 2 cm over and had to pay £40 extra each way. I still parked in the same area as normal so I became another 'cash cow'. Also, it you have to ring them for any reason, best of luck, it took me 3 days of constant ringing to get through to someone to book a cabin for 3 people travelling in two cars.Same thing every year so not just because they say they are busy, just not enough staff. Fortunately, we are using the Tunnel this year and for the next 2 trips. Best of luck.
