Can anyone give me an idea of just how large a 2-3kg horse lick is? I want to know whether it would fit comfortably in a 10 liter bucket of maize for example.

Yes I know, it's just that they come attached to a rope through the middle handy to help withdrawing it when spooning out the particles.

It's about the size of a mini football. Or like the size of a bowls ball

Excuse the ignorance but do you just hoof (!) this in to your swim or what?

No. I drop it in the bucket with my cooked particles and take it out when scooping out the particles for spombing. When I 've finished spombing, I drop it back in. They come with a hole through the middle and a rope attached. It makes it easier to lift out of the bucket. I have now bought a couple of them online and they are about six to seven inches tall and about 5 inches in diameter.

There Salt... and there's Salt.. I tend to find actually traipsing up the Himalayas and getting your own is far better than the shop bought every day of the week. Have to make it worth your while mind as doing once a month is killing me back..

I'm with this, a 20kg sack of crushed Himalayan is around £25. Cheaper if you buy the licks and smash them up yourself, albeit more time consuming.

Also surely the reason to use the salt is lost. I didn't realise anyone was using salt for palatability purposes, which with this method seems like it would be over done. I thought the main reason to use salt is to offer carp the salt itself in to the diet as they are reliant on it and it's hard to find in fresh water.

The actual amount of salt that gets dissolved from the lick is minimal. The block went into 10 kg of particles weighing 2.3 kg and came out weighing 2.1 kg. No need to smash them up.

Of course you are right, but that is true of salt in whichever form you buy it. This is however unbleached and meant for horses and people care an awful lot about what they feed their horses.

Any idea how long it would take for a whole one to dissolve ?
