I'm thinking about buying a set of Daiwa Infinity Rods that need a bit of TLC...
Was going to strip them down myself ready to have them rebuilt.
Can anyone tell me how to strip the Gloss Varnish from the Blanks as it's gone flaky in places?

Razor blade very time consuming slow and steady or you will make a balls of it .

Not the hardest job in the world, but as has been said, is a ball ache and takes time. Fresh pack of sharp Stanley blades, small bit of heat on the whippings.

Im sure the infinitys blanks are totally varnished not just the guides and it was ***** seymo stuff that peeled almost immediately , i wouldnt touch them with a barge pole

I believe you are right, it's a shame they ever varnished them at all because they are a lovely looking blank underneath. I've seen some old infinity magnum tapers fully stripped back bare and re built and they were really nice rods.

my mate Chris Palmer builds rods, both from new or rebuilds. He always uses a new blade for removing old varnish. Says its a laborious job, but its the only way to get the blanks back to their natural state before being sealed and treated.

I used to use a very fine wet and dry sandpaper, 600 grit.
The Stanley blade while good is so laborious.

I have done a couple of sets of magnums they are fantastic blanks .But I could probably build 5 sets of rods from scratch in the same time it would take me to refurb a set of infinities ! The problems you can come across refurbing rods you wouldnt think of.Cracked blanks under reel seats is the main one i used to come across . Really not worth the hassle for me.

Could I just ask what you'd recommend for covering the whipping thread , I've use flexcoat with mixed results , I did the last one's with yacht varnish but it takes days I'm only a hobby builder but I do have turner

I have used them all and the best for me without a doubt is U40 dura gloss ls supreme from hopkins holloway .self levelling and a joy to use . 2 coats is all you need .I would never use yacht varnish the finish is nowhere near as good

Yeah these are the old Magnum Tapers with the Gold Fittings, think I'll wait for something else to come up if it's that much hassle.
