Just been reading a bit about 'laser pointing pens' and how they can safely scare birds out of your swim.
Does anyone use one and do they work?

I have one (green one) and it certainly scares off the coots and tufties but has no impact on geese or swans.

Agree, at certain light levels they are good. I'm the daylight I find hit and miss. Your best bet is one coupled with a tufty torch. Get the green laser pen with the big (I think) 80160 or along those lines, much better turn the ones with aa batteries

I have a cheapo green laser and in low light it easily shifts coots, tufties, mallards, geese, and ever some swans.
Mine has a dodgy battery connection so I need a replacement...
Any links for a decent one, please.

Whatever pen you use be careful when using it if there is an angler on the opposite bank. If it goes in there eyes there can be tragic consequences.

Yup and it's a criminal offence. Also a criminal offence to point one at cars or aircraft.

I've got one range is 25 miles. Had to go to Loch Ness to test it though

Seriously though you need to be very careful when and where you use it. Or you could get in deep doo-doo.

I picked a green one up through ebay, not sure if the seller is still trading as some 'dodgy' overpowered laser pens were being used illegally.
It definitely scares off tufties, coots and swans. In daylight I found the best way was to hold it underneath the centre of my binoculars, look at the offending bird and then press the on button. I'm pretty close to target and they do spook off from it. At night it's obviously easier to target them.

If these things can have a serious affect on a persons eyes, even at range, doesn't anyone wonder about the eyes of the poor birds that are just going about their natural business?
You should be very careful ordering "high powered" laser pens online, especially imported ones.
I ordered a green "high powered" laser pen, which came from the United States, it was £50.
When it arrived, it was actually a blue laser - and it cuts through cardboard, pops balloons and basically melts through plastic. If I shine it into the sky - it illuminates the clouds, it's frankly insane.
My friend has a laser power meter, and it's actually measuring 1 Watt of power, (not 1mW, or 50mW or whatever) 1 actual Watt of power.
I won't use it - it's too powerful and I keep it indoors, even a reflection of it from the water - would be enough to cause eye damage, and shining it accidentally at somebody on the opposite bank could blind them permanantly.
Instead I now use a tufty torch, it works "okay" but nowadays I tend to just feed the birds off with loaves of bread, rather than try to scare them...

These things have no place anywhere near a lake, you can't even rely on peoples common sense with a simple head torch!
Carplife have a pre order deal on lights to scare off wildfowl at the moment.
