I'm looking after / fishing a friends lake. It's been hard going with only 7 fish in 13 trips, I know they're there but just not seeing them. I want to keep freebies trickling in over winter hoping to create a couple of spots for the Spring. I'm thinking a few kilos of maize every week or would I be better off getting some low oil pellets?

Stick with the maize, cheaper and far better than pellets for what you want to do.

Sweetcorn would be good, silver fish are less of an issue in winter, try your hardest to find where the fish are.

Much bigger brains than ours and millions of £££ have been used to develop feed pellets for fish. They can't resist them and if you feed the right pellet it will do them good. The Aller Aqua master pellet would be an obvious choice, but in your position I would be using one BP Milling's feeds.

Cheers looking at their BP Gold 25kg of 12mm at £32.50 looks good. Maybe include some Natrepel too

I'd keep trickling in sweetcorn in some likely spots but I so remember someone on my syndicate doing well on chick peas

Hemp and crushed boilies. But a soft quality boilie.
DNA switch or bug.if you can get 4/5 times a week for 4 weeks 1pt hemp and 10 crushed 18mm or so.
Dont over do it. Then the same hook bait.
Top of the far shelf summer bottom of it now. Bushwhacker is the tool though.

depends on bird life as well, i wouldnt use maize in shallow water on the lake i fish, all it does is create a feeding spot for the coots. And they clock the spot and visit the same as you would hope the carp do. obviously if you dont have many birds on the lake go for it, but i use a bit of hemp some pellet and a crushed boile approach . Horses for courses really hard to say without seeing the lake etc. 7 fish in 13 trips would be a good result on a lot of lakes to be honest though

Yeah I'm ok with the 7 fish given the low stock and not doing nights. Just want to invest a little effort now to have a better spring

Pick a boilie that has a good winter track record. Rishworth tutis or mainline cell would be my choice with a high flavour pop up. Keep the bait going

Don't think we can afford a boilie approach so looking at cheaper options of pellet and maize

There's only one metric commercial pellet manufacturers care about and thats FCR Food conversion ratio....how much weight the fish will put on in relation to how much food they have eaten. Its not necessarily the best thing for them and theres no denying fish will eat them.
I used to use salmon fry crumb a fair bit, good attractant i think!

As per post 2 - id go just with maize, little and often, and preferably in places you can see if its being eaten or not.
You will catch thru the winter on this kind of lake id bet - no need to wait for spring
