For years now Anglers have been experimenting with ingredients and baits, but with the recent hormone threads/debate it got me thinking, how do we know any of these are safe for any fish that swim in our lakes and rivers?
I only ask this because I'm thinking of trying one or two new ingredients, all human grade, that can be brought off the shelf, but I've no idea whether they are safe for the fish I am targeting.
I imagine at some point someone (many years ago) had to use a bit of bread, a grain of corn or hemp seed, among plenty of other things, prior to knowing how they would affect fish, right?
Things like nuts, over the years we've learnt that they need to be prepared correctly, to be used safely, but I imagine this would have been at the expense of one or two (maybe a lot more) fish, along the way, for which can be toxic if not prepared correctly.
Where is the line drawn, so to speak? Or is it not?

if they are safe for humans, you could easily say they are safe for fish. We have a much more complex body. You normally have human food grade and feed grade, one is safe for animals and not us, the other is safe for all.
Hear what you're saying. For me the line is when you go past using food items or stimulating the feeding responses using chemicals (flavours, etc) and start luring them using other responses, i.e. reproductive.
Saying that, this sort of thing is done in other types of hunting, with Deer especially. But then you dont release those animals after shooting them in the face.

I'm no expert, but may not be as simple as ok for humans, ok for animals such as carp.
Theobromine in chocolate being poisonous to dogs could be an example.

Not as simple as saying that either. 20mg per kg of bodyweight to start seeing symptoms of poisoning. 40-50mg per kilo for dangerous poisoning. A rough guide to how poisonous theobromine is to dogs. They have a tolerance.
If it was that simple then every substance is harmful to humans at some level. You can can die from drinking too much water ffs.
My point being that human food grade items are likely to be safe (hence the word COULD that I used) for fish. i.e. peanuts, human grade were always screened for aflatoxin whereas feed grade wasnt. It was made that all grades would be screened nowadays but the example stands on the previous rules.

You might as well ask about the ingredients you are thinking of as it will answer your question straight away , no doubt they'll have been used before if they bring something to the table so to speak

Research the ingredients you want to try, make a little test batch and get to a water/pond where you can gauge the reaction.

As others have said, research what you want to try. Look for clues on it being used for other fish or in scientific papers. Most things have been tried before by someone if you look hard enough.
Start at low levels and work up. Carp do eat a LOT of rubbish in the natural environment so they are not easy to poison/harm unless you start chucking kilos of the stuff in
Also don't be afraid to ask on here. Lots of knowledge and experience that you can get answer from for free. You will have to filter the daft answers out, and you will get some, but you won't find anything that you can make millions from so don't be shy to ask.
