Recently got a set of 9 footers for a holiday trip and really liked them.
Now thinking of moving from my 12 footers to 10 footers.
I know there are many factors but how much casting distance do you lose going from a 12ft to a 10ft ?
Also Im 5ft7 so thinking a smaller rod would also suit me.
Anyone else made the switch and found they can cast better with a 10ft rod for both normal and spod rods ?

I moved over to 10 foot Scopes and Dwarf's for spod and marker. I dont fish massive lakes and find i can still hit the same spots as i did with 12 foot rods. Plus they are far easier to stick in the car.

I bought a cheap set of 10 footers about 3 years ago and can definitely cast better with them compared to my 12 footers. Unfortunately, my youngest has "inherited" them as he has started to come with me. So now I'm considering getting a decent 10ft set and ditching the 12 footers for all but the largest waters.

If you like the 9fts then why not just stick with them? I use 9fts for basically all my fishing these days and love them. Reckon I can cast them further than my 12ft rods these days.
If you've got the 9fts I'd just keep using them, unless you're simply unable to do something important with them.

Choose the rods to suit the venue, I've got 10ft, 12ft and 13ft, all suit thier purpose. If I were going somewhere that all I knew was its farely large it would be the 13ft rods as they can fish from margin to way beyond the 10ft rods range and a fare bit further than the 12ft.

With the 9 footers I was struggling to get more than 60/70 yards, the line kept frapping.
Maybe due to unbalanced setup as paired with Emblem 5500's. But i did find I when the line didnt frap the lead went out well.
Current rods are 12ft 3.25lb century ng's that Ive had for years and Ive never been able to give them a good thump if you know what I mean hence thinking 10 footers are maybe better suited for me.
Im more curios to see people that did switch found they lost distance. it seems the responses are mixed with some people not noticing a difference and some keeping there 12/13 footers for distance.

I use my 10 foot Insurgents all the time now up to about 90 yds with a small 4 bait stringer
I find them easier to handle in tight swims with overhanging trees.I have a set of 12ft Dominators on the loft not been used yet can't see me using them at the moment lol

I would say, with all else being equal, you lose something like 20-25% going from 12 to 10 ft. Just a guess, cause i don't have the same rod/reel in the same testcurve in both 10 and 12 
Spodding at my canal with 10ft/3,25lbs at 80 yards was terrible, really pushing it there, no fun, whereas 12 ft/3lbs is a breeze. I'm sure a more dedicated setup will perform much better.
But, really like my 10ft and on most waters i prefer them now.

I have 10 ft Harrison torrix customs great rods and can cast a fair distance coupled with my nash dwarf 6 fit for travelling light but then if I need that extra distance using my torrix's then I'll wade out a little if allowed to give me a few extra yards

What are the 9 footers? I find I can comfortably get a 2oz lead and small pva stick over 100 yards with my 3lb tc scopes, which have basia reels on them. Find it harder with a 3oz lead curiously, whereas my 12ft rods prefer a 3oz lead. My 4.5 scope spod has the Ultegra spod reel and although it's a new setup for me and not used yet on a water I've needed to spod 100 yards on it feels like it has tonnes of power - was doing 60 yards without really thinking about it (although my accuracy wasn't great, found the Dot spod wasn't super stable in the air).

It actually depends on what rods you are using a 12 ft torrix is going to outcast a 12ft silstar traverse x etc .10ft aviators will send a lead out of sight in the right hands but recovery is much slower than a 12ft aviator .Horses for courses.
Usually use 12 ft rods tried 10ft on canals etc , not for me
I've got to 7ft rods which are fun and good in the right place, but I find my accuracy is lost on shorter rods, probably just not used them enough
