Does bait choice (free offerings) matter when fishing in deep old silt? Is it best to use something stronger smelling/tasting so as not to be masked by the silt? I have been using particles but now thinking that maybe a stinky boilie heavily glugged might be a better idea?

Are the carp actually feeding in stinky rancid silt? Are you sure?

It doesn't smell rancid, just strong. And yes they were sheeting up and popping heads out on Friday night right over me.

If thry are feeding deep in silt, it's probably best to put a bait in the silt they are sievng through, rather than fishing on top of the silt. Try a bottom bait straight out of the bag on a fairly short braided rig, first..

Fish straight into it.. I caught most of the big fish from a really difficult estate lake fishing into horrible silt whilst most struggled fishing on the harder silt. If the fish are in it and are feeding in it on bloodworm etc then you will have it off by being different. Bait wise I was using a snowman with one of Marks s2's balanced baits as a topper and the bottom bait it didn't matter what I put on. Hope this helps

Straight into the silt for me, fished silty lakes all my life in the northwest and bottom baits right into the silt definitely sort them out when they are fizzing up, a little bag on the hook with some crumb and pellet or a stringer works a treat. I don't even lengthen my rigs, 8 inches of coated braid to a lead clip.

Not so much bait, I would look at rig length and presentation, if you have fish there and it's not happening, why

Do not underestimate the carp's ability to find food.

As you have said, there is 'clean' silt and there is foul smelling silt.
In the clean silt there is often one heck of a lot of natural food, plenty of bloodworm, mussels etc.
I tend not to worry about my bait, more on getting my rigs to the carp.
Coated or uncoated braid around 300mm long, and back to basics line aligned hook on a running lead.
