Took our 9 month old jack Russel to the vets because he was scratching his right ear badly.
Vet, a young girl asked which ear was worst , I told her the right, she took a stethoscope and checked his chest, felt his rib's said he was slightly over weight... well he was a puppy, don't they say that about puppy fat in humans.
Used the torch thing in his ear to tell me it was his right ear....really.
Gave me an ear wash and ear drops, went to reception to collect......£103.
Got home and checked products online........£24.99.
£78.00 for 5 minutes work to tell me my puppy was overweight and to repeat what I already told her which ear".........what a ripoff. Need to change my vets. I am a pensioner by the way.

As for pet insurance i found animal friends were very good.
I'd suggest purchasing the best one they have.

It's hardly surprising though. Specialist services cost money. Think yourself lucky, when I had my English mastiff he had cushings disease which cost me over £300 per month for his meds, and that was for about 5-6 years, and he then got cancer in his bladder and that cost me an extra 7k in his last 11 months. Nearly sent me broke but I'd do it all again in a heartbeat

The consultation charge at our vets is £50. Before we lost our old girl to cancer last year she was on tablets for her arthritis which were costing us 120 a month due to being a giant breed... After a bit of research we found we could get a six month prescription from the vets for £11 and get the tablets online for £50 a month.

I have a ten year old shar pei who in the first two years suffered with ear problems badly.
Did some research and found some stuff called zymox, over the counter liquid can find on amazon,
We use the blue bottle and the past 8yrs he hasnt had a single issue with hes ears..

Check who actually owns your vets. The one we used to use was taken over by the CVS group. We found the care and advice to be poor and the cost extortionate. As an example, our Labrador deveoped a limp, they x-rayed her, at great cost, and diagnosed she had arthritis. We asked what was the next course of action, we were told that she would need to be on Tramadol and lead walks only for the rest of her life. We wouldn't accept this, so sort out an alternative privately owned vet. They couldn't have been more different, first tried a steroid injection, that didn't work, then an enzyme injection that worked brilliantly for over a year. When this wore off the repeat injection didn't work, so she's now on Librella, and running around like a pup, from barely been able to walk.

Not worth using the insurance for £103. I got hit with a £200 bill for 15 min appointment and some antibootics for our 1 yr old rhodesian ridgeback and he wouldnt even take the tablets. Tried wrapping them in ham, cheese, inside a sausage but the clever bugger just ate the food and spat the tablet out. Hes was fine after a couple of days so still dont know what was wrong with him. There bloody expensive things dogs, its costs £170 a month just to feed and insure him and now the wife wants another ridgeback to keep him company. We are with direct line with there best cover and its around £46 a month.

One of our spaniels was like that taking tablets. You could give her a wrapped tablet and like yours she would eat the food and then reject the tablet. Even if it was followed by a few more pieces of food she would often spit the tablet out after eating everything else.
Best way I found was to wrap the tablet as you did but feed her a series of similar titbits (small enough to swallow whole ) very quickly so she didn't have time to sort out the tablet.
Personally I wouldn't take out pet insurance. My thoughts are that all insurance companies are in the business of making money so on average they must come out on top or they will not survive.
Depends if you are happy to chance that big bill of course.

I was in the vets the other day and i had a bit of delay and noticed that literally everyone was leaving with a 100 pound bill and a little bag. kinda like the kids parties when you were young....everyone leaves with something.
Unfortunately the vast majority of vets are now ion the hands of multinational companies who only interest is profit.
My dog needed some light surgery and i was asked by the vet of i had insurance which i didnt and im 100% sure the price was different because i didnt have insurance (i.e if you do have insurance they are going to get every last penny out whatever needs to be done to your pet.) however they shouldn't be dual pricing.
Insurance wont be any use for bills of 100 pound or so as your premium will just increase.
Hibiscrub is worth getting online as this can be used for minor complaints and quite often subscribed by the vets at a huge mark up.
