I am considering a change of reels.....currently have Basia 45SLD reels which I really like....but....I keep looking at the Shimano aTechnium Mags....
Moving onto a lake which is all distance work, no leaders allowed so using tapered leader lines or straight line lead work and the thing that annoys me is the very occasional issue with the Basia that the line will fall behind the spool ....I can live with this for the odd occasion it happens though.....but the Shimano has a line guard.
Realise we are talking very top end reels and fine margins but would appreciate comments and thoughts from those that may have used both..

Owned both and line still goes behind spool on the new mgs.There is not alot between the reels and if you like the Daiwa then stick with them

I had the Tech mags, the one with the Velcro type line guards, what an utter crock of ***** on a VERY expensive reel, lay the rods against the tent to bait up etc, birds nest, any slack line, same as, sold

I find this happens a lot more with lighter leads, on all reels, not just the basias. Had it a lot less when using heavier leads

Line guard makes a difference I reckon. The line is always going under the spools on my XSB mags, ditto an old set of 45 QD's but I can't remember it happening on the 12000 XTB's I'm currently using. Same on the XTA's I used to own it never happened on those.
That said, the line never went under the spools on a cast for me, it was always in a 'slack line scenario' where it would behave like Zebedee from the Magic Roundabout and end up under the spools.

Both the Shimano and Daiwa have similar lines guards and I've always had the occasional issue with both the exception for me and my most favourite design is on the emblem or Tournement which is a little noisy both very similar designs and both far better than spool skirts design.
I never suffered from it on the cast it's when the line is slackened and has a reasonable degree of twist in it.

Recent lesson with TE confirmed reels actually make very little difference - we are talking a few yards and in the hands of casting pros. Surely you want a reel with good line lay the mitigates tangles and decent gearing / cranking power to retrieve those slightly 'off' casts to the horizon - maybe keep your Basias and get some 13ft rods instead? (if you haven't already) or invest in some pimped 6000t's?

Since leaving the Shimmy Baitrunner era and using ‘Big Pits' my reels choices have been:
Shimano Biomaster Titanos GT7000/8000
Shimano Longcast ( original ones)
Daiwa Infinity 5500
Basia Tournament 45QD's
Shimano Technium 10000XT ( original ones)
Daiwa infinity 5000
Daiwa Tournament Basia 45 QDX - current reels.
Out of all these reels the one that stands head and shoulders above the rest is the Technium 10000XT. I regret ever selling these for completely the wrong reasons.
About 2 years ago in lockdown when bored I saw and researched a Penn Affinity 7000 Longcast Custom Carbon Reel. The idea was to try it and thoroughly test it against the Basia, and see if how it stacked up against a reel which cost over twice as much. This nearly didn't happen as I also bought a new Baitboat and got carried away with clicking on the extras so in a fit of guilt ( and spousal moaning) flogged off a lot of gear to recoup some of the costs - the unused Penn ( still in Wales lockdown) was offered up on here for sale to help recuperate said spending. Luckily no one bit and it was still in the tackleroom once lockdown ended.
So I started using it, at first with the other two places on the pod taken up by the Basia's. I use a rowing boat with motor to place baits out 250-300 yds on my syndi, use bags and cast to spots regularly and occasionally the big heave Ho to cast baits out, so any reel I use gets a fair testing of most disciplines.
I will do a write up in the review section in due course ( as was my previous intention) but suffice to say this week I have a heavily discounted Penn Custom Carbon winging its way to me which I found online, which will make it a pair.
