You can call me a nostalgic pr**ck or whatever but this has been bugging me for some time.... fully scaled/scaley ones were a thing of mystic and would be few and far between amongst the slate greys, the Italian ones, the dinks, Commons.
With today's availability of stock (great stock at that) every fishery seems to be stocking “scaley ones“..... is this the death of the elusive scaley one???? And in time will that ugly old leathery mirror be the most sought after fish in the pond?

I'd say the rarest strain about is a proper Italian. The indoctrination that “scaley bangers” are what you want to be catching can only last so long. No doubt it'll come full circle and when, as you say, there is a huge majority of scaley mirrors, that it'll be sparsely scaled mirrors being stocked.

I remember the slate greys and the Italian strains with their big bellies I'm sure someone caught an Italian strain a while back I remember reading about it

It's all personal, for some all that matters is size, others it's scales or colour or both. Shape and colour for me, love the long lean dark torpedo's most, can't stand pale pasty gut bucket fish, said it before if these were human they would be classed as clinically obese.

I used to take the old leney commons for granted, now I wish everywhere I went had them.
Plenty of commercials and day tickets seem to have mirrors and commons which just look like the 15 quid ones you can buy out of a pond shop. No character to them.
It's all well and good stocking scaley ones, but if the environment doesn't suit, they will just look pale and characterless.
