For the rare occasion I might use one of these like if it's only an hour until it gets light can anyone recommend a compact lightweight type version to take (just in case)

I've been looking at getting a new one of these myself and whilst I can't give you a review as I haven't bought it yet, I am drawn to the Saber sling which folds in half so more compact to carry. Otherwise I cannot see a huge difference in the mesh style retainers, apart from quite a range in price

Korum do a very compact one,I've got one but haven't used it yet.

I have the Chub retention sling, would estimate it weighs a pound and a half when dry and rolls up. Weighs 4lb soaking wet, sturdy and reliable 👍

The original Trakker Sanctuary slings are pretty compact - I wrap mine up with my landing net mesh and they fit in a stink bag / side pocket of my rod holdall no probs with room to spare

To be honest I don't use it that often; other than actually weighing fish - just as easy to use a landing net with a deep mesh and stick a bankstick through the spreader for short term retention . .

I'd much rather use a sack where needed so the fish can choose where they sit in the water column. When I used to use them in the 90's most of the time the fish would end up much lower in the water than a retention sling. Unfortunately all the waters I'm on have banned them, yet retainers are allowed which I really don't agree with personally as I think some people leave them in there far too long.

Absolutely - nothing wrong with sacks if used properly during either day or night. They recover better when they can sulk at their own depth . . .totally agree most use retention slings verbatim and for far too long waiting for the daylight trophy shot. Never once had a prob with sacks - used to tie a mini esp marker to them so could always see where they'd settled
