Hi,can anyone recommend an easy to use( idiot proof) SLR camera that isn't going to break the bank.
Ideally something I can pretty much point and shoot with.
I don't video it's just for still shots.

Most of them have auto modes.....
But if you're only going to use auto it may be worth considering a bridge camera. Then you can have one package with the lens covering macro to long zoom, no need for multiple lenses.

There is very little point in getting a DSLR if you're not going to learn how to use it buddy. You need to learn the basics to get any where near the potential of the camera. Auto mode is not the one imo.

I have been using the Sony a5000 so am used to messing about with the iso and f rating,so I'm not totally useless on a camera but I know that moving to a DLR is a bit of a jump,I just don't want anything to complex that will fry my brain.

I mean replacing it with a newer model, like an a 6300 or better.
It'll be familiar and you can use any lenses you may have for the a5000.

There is no jump from your a5000 to a dslr. The a5000 is a dslr without a mirror. Its superior in some ways. I agree with duggs, just upgrade to a better mirrorless camera

I don't have any other lenses for the a5000 but a lad on the bank has told me to get a 50 mm fixed lense and the picture quality should be bang on,no idea if this is true or not

I've got a Sony a5100 and very happy with it but have not looked at anything else since I got it. Have things moved on enough to warrant changing with spending a huge amount?

Imo a fixed/prime lens will get you MUCH better trophy shots mate.
@Goose, not really mate. You'll get more bells and whistles but as far as I'm aware the sensors haven't improved significantly.

Image quality won't improve much with the newer camera, things like auto focus, frame rates etc have come a long way tho, also battery life, screen quality etc
The sigma 30 and 56 1.4 lenses are worth a look for great image quality, bit bulky tho

The problem with older mirror less cameras and even SLRs is the auto focus. Auto focus on older mirror less cameras even in daylight was a pain so a body upgrade isn't always a bad choice

Tbh I never really got the slating mirrorless cameras got for bad auto focus, for single af they've always been good, as good or better than dslrs(especially in low light) . For constant af most were, and some still are ****, but I don't often use that.

What is it about the a5000 that you're unhappy with? What is it that you're hoping to get out of a DSLR?
I have a nex-7 which is the predecessor of the a5000 which has done me great service for many years of professional use. I also have a full frame A7R II that have used for the same. See absolutely no benefit to an SLR over a fullframe compact system like the A series. Don't focus just on the bodies though, they just capture the image, it's the lenses that make the image. If you're not getting the results you want with the a5000 you might find a different lens makes a difference - or just play with the aperture settings and zoom on your current one to change the depth of view.
Honestly though, phone cameras are now so unbelievably good that there's very rarely a reason to be using a standalone camera at all. I never take my cameras with me fishing, my iPhone does just as good a job as either of them for snapping a pic of a capture, and they're able to easily generate images with narrow depth of view etc that we normally associate with higher quality cameras through easy to use shooting modes (eg portrait mode on the iPhone).
