Following purchase of a moored boat and the compact outside space to work with whilst fishing ... i am considering retractable rods and i have a couple questions if i may ... I am considering 10ft. I should add i already own a set of TFG Compact Carp Rods in 10ft 2.5lb .... Is the retractable element of a rod worth the extra??
Do all different makes 10ft retractable rods collapse to the same storage length?
After casting can the rods be retracted to the shorter length whilst on rests and re-extended in case of having a run or to reel in?
Traditionally i fish with 2.75lb rods .... I wont be fishing a big river, but it is tidal and fish size pretty unknown (to me) .... but with most manufacturers offering around 3.25lb- 3.5lb rods ... and a few of lesser test curves .... Should i go toward higher end or can i go for a nearer 2.75lb

A lot of them tend to bend deeper into the blank. So a 3.5 is a different animal to a 12' 3.5 which doesn't bend beyond the joint.
I've used 2.75, 3 and 3.25.. none were offensively rigid but the 2.75s didn't feel great with any lead size over about 2oz. The 2.25 scope though, I'd happily use for any carp with a 1oz lead

I use 9ft 3lb scope rods for boat fishing. Possibly different as I'm talking fishing from the bank but using a boat to drop the rig and tow back, so casting isn't an issue. The 3lb scope blank can easily handle an 8oz lead, that includes dragging a lead back through 200 yards of weed. The rod bends all the way through and in my option you wouldn't need a higher test curve.
I'd never try and use the rod retracted, could see that ending badly very easily.

... As this is the case, im not sure i will gain much over the 10ft non retractable rods i already have

I guess the main thing would be if you could chuck a lead that's heavy enough to hold bottom far enough with that rod. Particularly if it's tidal. Maybe get a few 5/6oz leads and give them a throw about. In my experience most decent rods with lower test curves are more than capable of pulling in heavy leads with heavy fish, they just get very bendy!

From what i've seen the fox explorer can be fished at 2 different lengths. In theory you should be able to extend it to its full length after a take, but many ifs and buts as you can imagine.

Yeah as previously said the fox explorer may be the best bet as this has a bung to keep the blank secure allowing you two fish at two different lengths.

The xtractor, Korum, dwarf etc. have a shorter handle than scopes and Cotswold rods versions too. Definitely better for handling on a boat.

Thankyou for the Fox Explorer suggestion ... the idea that it can fish both 8ft and 10ft lengths appeals greatly .... i am also thinking a shorter handle would be beneficial ... I had started to look at the ESP Stalker rods as have shorter handle (but not retractable) but the boat space is compact and the mooring platform is pretty narrow so i still cant help thinking a retractable rod will be most beneficial .... im going to start a thread specifically about the Explorers as think these tick the most boxes
