Hi All,
Might be me because I am a bit of a shorty 5 foot 7, the length of the butt seems wastefully long, I certainly don't use the last 4 inch's of butt when casting and when I am playing a hard fighting carp the butt is nearer my kneecap than my waste..
I was thinking of going to a rod builder to have the reel seats moved down 4 inches (roughly), which will aid casting and not be uncomfortable when playing a fish, but then think..
1: what is the purpose of a long butt.
2: Is it possible.
3: Cost
The rods are TX 7s which I have been using for a year and love them (in a manly way ofcourse)

How do you think it will aid casting? Can't see it making much difference myself ( I'm a short ass too)

Its just I was using a spod rod that had a shorter butt and found holding the end section more comfortable, I think because you hold the rod at the reel seat you are increasing the lenght of the rod in real terms.
Mybe I'm wrong.. Thats why I posted, wanted to know different opinions.

I used to have a 11foot dam rod years ago that had a short handle on the butt probably just over 2ft long
I thought it was quite a good idea and thought very wasteful on a normal rod but length

When I used to make rods and even to this day, fitting a multiplier on my beach rods, the recommended method to get the right reel to butt length was to stick the butt in your armpit and reach along the blank and where your hand goes, is where the reel is positioned.
But, with factory built rods, you have to put up with what they make.
A rod with a reel too close to the butt would make it tip heavy which is not too bothersome if they just sit in the rod rests 99% of the time, but would become a strain on the wrist if held for long periods if not balanced out with a heavy reel or weights inside the butt.

Handle length measured from reel seat to under the armpit, any longer and when you manoeuvre the rod it will catch your body making it awkward etc. Longer handles separate the hands further allowing for faster hand movement and greater leverage with the lower hand. Most off the shelf rods will be made to a happy medium to suit a mass market.
Unfortunately you'd have to cut the reel seat off and replace with new, if you are quite handy with diy skills, it's an easy task if you are careful etc duplon or shrink grips are obviously easier than cork. Plenty of videos showing how to etc. price wise if you did it yourself with a standard reel seat and shrink tube you are looking at say £30 each ish. To have them done professionally I'd say £80/£100 each.

Interesting, because a long time ago I had a very lovely pair of Shimano X carp ,11ft long 2lb tc,really lovely rods for their time.
Anyway I often thought the butt way,to long,and remember thinking I'd make the handle length shorter,I never did though..

Maybe, maybe not. I tend to hold the seat and the end of the handle anyway,and my casting ain't too shabby considering I've got a knackered shoulder

I didnt know there was an actual measurement for an indivual's butt lengh per arm length, which makes sense now.
As Tony Kay ( rod builder ) lives around the corner from me I think I will give him a call and update this when I have seen him.

Hmm, no so sure about that theory and 5'7" is hardly short, my missis is 5'8" LOL. Me, 6'1". So yeah, we're all different and that's why I have rods custom built. I can't get on with overtly long or indeed, short butt sections. It varies by rod length and type of rod too, even the reel you use if want to balance the rod better. I tend to cast best with slightly shorter handles than some might favour...
My 12ft Hi S ER's and 12ft ES have 19.5" duplon behind the reel seat, my 11ft hi S 2 1/4 have 19" of cork and my 10ft Hi S 10 3/4 have 17" of cork behind the reel seat.

You are right Mark That theory suits some people not all and only certain rods.try putting 19 1/2 inch behind reel seat on a 9ft stalking rod or spinning rod , Im 6ft 4 been building rods for a number of years all my own rods that i use have no more than 18 inch behind the reel seat most have 17 inch plus reel seat plus 2 inch of cork in front total 24 inch im talking about 10 ft 11ft and 12ft carp and pike rods. I find a longer handle cumbersome and unnecessary for me . Handle overall will obviously differ aswell using different size reel seats .
Take a look at Dlst website ,Dave lumb he knows how to get the most from a blank and most of his standard handles are around 17 or 18 inch behind reel seat on 11 and 12 foot rods .of course myself and i am sure Dave would build you any length handle you want.
