It's not a new thing. Carp are a pest out there as in the USA. Destroying native fish and habitats.

Cannot remember now it was a longtime ago I either watched or read something about Australia or New Zealand where by they had an in invasive species in their river system from memory a type of snail or crayfish something like that anyway it was burrowing tunnels into the banks so when the high waters came the banks were eroding away at a vast rate so they put carp in to eat the evasive species problem was they did such a good job at eating the food source that when it was not as readily available the carp which after sometime had vastly multiplied were then digging away at the holes in the bank to get at the food source, it made the problem a lot worse which is when it was a kill the carp at all costs and illegal to return them.

Doesn't Australia have other issues caused by invasive species..other than carp..

I fear this released on purpose Herpes virus is going to cause much long term harm to the Australian eco system..possibly more so than the carp.

Also.. Man playing god yet again,..remember myxomatosis in this country,a man made ,laboratory created virus..

Makes you question a few things..!.

I remember going to Australia on holiday many years ago and being slightly surprised at their ‘alien species' attitude to carp.

Imet a bloke in a park in Adelaide and he caught a bucketful to serve in a Chinese restaurant !

I also found an article in the local paper (I think it was Alice Springs) about a competition involving throwing frozen carp as far as possible. It was a way of encouraging people to remove them from local waters.

I brought the article home and sent it to a carp magazine here who subsequently printed it. Some of the outraged letters in the next issue were hilarious.....

It's been on the books for a couple of years now, odd how its not been implemented sooner tbh, probably studying potential issues with other species.

Mark, Honestly.
Carp in the US were introduced in the 1860 by the US Government as a food source.
Today they are recognized by most states as a Naturalised species, nearly always described in the group of ‘Rough' fish.

The Carp Anglers Group and American Carp Society have an ongoing publicity campaign to counter the false rhetoric that carp are responsible for declines in other fish stocks..it usually turns out that water quality issues are responsible.

Let's at least get this right on a UK based fishing board.
