agree . . .designed to catch the angler not a carp . . .how many peeps do you see with a mahoosive pop up collection - primarily because they're never used / don't work and the user has blindly bought another flavour / colour in a desperate attempt make them work!
I only ever have 2x pots of pop ups - both 12mm Northern Specials, pink & white . . .they're mainly used for snowman rigs (because they're soft and easy to whittle into shape) but also for showing fish / lobbing out at the beginning of a sesh whilst I'm sorting everything else out . . .

The amount of carp caught on pop ups is, pretty much all the big known fish of the past 30 years have all fallen to pop ups at some point.

I cant even begin to reply to this comment its so ridiculous. comparing humans eating in our environment to carp eating in theirs? oh dear. how do you feel about zigs and surface baits

I'm no expert, but for me a fish looking down from above can't tell if a bait is popped up or not, and will dip down to pick it up as if it were on the bottom. This is why pop ups generally work better over a spread of boilies and not so well over bits and pieces where the fish tend to grub around and miss the hook bait.
Personally I've caught tons of fish on pop ups, usually where a bottom bait couldn't be presented. They tend to single out the bigger ones too.
I'm no expert, but for me a fish looking down from above can't tell if a bait is popped up or not, and will dip down to pick it up as if it were on the bottom. . . .my experience is slightly different, but then I'm anal about finding a spot to effectively place a bottom bait for the majority of my fishing. Pop ups do have their place (chods etc) however I'd rather use a PVA bag over a chod if appropriate! Each to their own - probably a confidence ting . . .

I have to agree with this my syndicate and a few other lakes I fish, pop ups just really don't have the same effect as a bottom bait or a wafter, I've found that over the years that I get way more bites not using pop ups everywhere I go really.
So much so I own 3 pots that's 12mm northern specials in each colour for my bag work when I first get to a lake or using as a snowman that's it. I don't use them for anything else for me pop ups look so unnatural to a carp I just won't use them.
Seen them shy away from pop ups while watching them feed in clear water but happily feed on the same spot with the same colour just with a wafter on the deck instead.

When you say clear water, is that also shallow water? I think a fish seeing a pop up side on in shallow water is completely different from a big fish looking at a pop up from a more vertical downward angle.
