Is there any reason why it would be ill advised to use a spod reel on your fishing rods?
I'm currently on a large boating lake that is very weedy. I'm using my trusty Penn Affinity 7000 and they are fine, but pulling in through 200 yards of weed beds a bit more crank wouldn't hurt.
Looking at the spec of the Shimano Ultegra spod it has waterproof drag, 5.2:1 gearing and 124cm line retrieve. Seems perfect for chucking about in a boat and winching in Canadian?

Absolutely fine the Diawa spod reels were in vogue a few years ago as main use reels !!

I recently visited a lake where the cats were destroying my 25lb mono, so switched over to my two ultegra spod reeled rods with 50lb braid and landed a 56lb cat. Would not have been possible with my mono. Absolutely no problem.

Dont confuse retrieval rate and cranking power a high retrieve reel such as a spod reel doesn't automatically mean it has more cranking power or torque, often a lower gear ratio reel will have more cranking power.

Indeed, it takes a lot more pumping to get a lump of weed moving with a high retrieve reel.

Used 3 Daiwa spod reels for a while, zero problems at all. Cheap and max cranking power. Know a lot of lads who fish range venues like Rockford have been using them for years

They would be fine, but it's max cranking speed, not power.
I used mine on a 4th rod, had to pump and wind repeatedly to get the line off the deck and moving where I could just pick up the other rods with entohs and just wind

Used the Daiwa spod reels with carbon drag washers (about ½ turn to full lock) since they came out.
No problems at all.

Absolutely fine mate, I got a set of Emblem Pro's (same as the emblem spod) for my distance rods after asking the same question on here. They're brilliant

I love to pump, so no problem there...
Interesting to hear such a positive response. Does all the non flip bail arm stuff on the emblem spod make any difference in a fishing situation? Begs the question apart from the bait runner, which I wouldn't use, why pay £200 more for a infinity BR over the emblem spod? They look like they have the same body?
And the Ultegra spod appears to have the same waterproof drag as the power aero?

The infinity is completely different, much lower ratio, different body, br function..
The emblem Pro was a step up from the spod, used prices were pretty sensible last time I looked too.
I think you'd soon get used to any reel tbh, I can't stand my aerlex spod, but if I had 4 and only used them I'd probably find them ok
