I want to get a set of new baitrunner reels for targeting large carp and catfish, I'm torn between these 2 reels: the Shimano Baitrunner ST RB Reel 10000 or Okuma Longbow XT Baitfeeder Reel in equivalent 10000 size. They are both the same price I just don't know which is better.

Suggest you differentiate between carp and catfish. Two completely different fish, requiring two different approaches and two different sets of tackle.

Second hand Daiwa infinity, or the original Shimano long cast, will be good for both.

It looks as if you want the bait runner facility. If that's the case I'd go for the shimano. In 1000 size it will cope with any carp or catfish you will catch in the UK. You don't need different gear.

The Shimano will deal with almost everything you need in UK fishing other than long distance fishing. Okuma makes a good reel but if you want a bait runner I would stick with Shimano

When you say large catfish, how large do you mean? Those reels would be ok for upto 60-70lbers but if you are fishing for big ones then a set of the old Shimano longcasts is the way to go.

Seems bit of an unnecessary comment and not a pleasant welcome to this forum.
The OP did say beginner reel for large carp not that he was a beginner. For all you know he might have spent many years fishing for smaller carp / coarse fish and now going after larger carp.

Couldn't agree more. When I first deliberately went carp fishing at the age of 12 in 1967 all I dreamed of was Walkers 44 and have been dreaming ever since. Genuine carp anglers target big fish and take the knocks and enjoy every fish they catch whatever the size. If you can't dream, what's the point. Go for it boy and welcome to carp angling. Don't worry overmuch about gear, be an angler not a fashion model.
