Just pondering what tactics to use for fishing in fairly heavy weed - Specifically line choice and lead set up.

Fishing will typically be within 30-40 yards and the common scenario of some weed in the margin, fishing to fairly clear spots beyond the margin weed.

I typically like fishing with fluorocarbon and running leads, but thinking about switching to mono and lead clips.

Any thoughts?

Currently spooled up with 18lb CM90 and not sure if I want to change it to 18lb CF600

I would use braid with a 5ft 25lb fluorocarbon leader or 3ft lead core if the rules allow. Otherwise strong mono .40+ straight through.

If you are fishing on the clean area past the weed you should be able to use a leadclip but make sure the lead can eject easily. Another option would be a helisafe/C-clip.

I would suggest that, depending on the type and thickness of weed that you consider a solid PVA bag approach. One of my favourite club lakes is chokka full of silk weed. I tend to find a clear spot as a first action and feed it through the day, while ignoring that spot/s and fishing a bag right in to the weed then just before dark, all rods on the clear spot. That tactic has been quite successful for me. 21lb P Line extrusion, loop to loop connection.

Another Up for MCF Dumper Clips or Nash Weed Clip.

Gardner have recently brought a few of their 'Chat' videos on YouTube discussing fishing in weed....maybe worth a watch

I have gone with 30lb sinking braid of 0.35mm diameter.

Does that have to have a leader or could it be fished naked? I'm currently using 1m of 45lb Silk ray on each rod.

A thick flouro leader may be a bit kinder on the flank's.

I'd definitely be using a shortish leader on the end to protect the fish and stop any lifting of scales 👍

I would definitely NOT be fishing leadcore anywhere near weed.

Should you snap off, the leadcore can catch up all kind of debris and weed; if it is trailing behind a fish then you could have killed that fish. Don't ask me, ask Keith Moors or Ken Townley.

Fluorocarbon mainline, either inline or run ring, braided hooklink, and depending on whether you are able to find a clear spot or not, critically balanced (snowman on clear spot), or pop-up if you are in the weed. Put the whole lot in a pva bag with some pellets, maize, chopped and whole boilies.

I don't agree with you. If used correctly there is no harm in using lead core anywhere.

I personally don't drop my leads on a helicopter set up for safety reasons.

If I tied 15lb mono to your ankles and ask you to swim away from me you wouldn't be able to. 15lb mono is just as ‘dangerous' as lead core in terms of strength.

The safest way to fish would be 8lb line and actually play the fish and not drag it in but who would use it?

Also Keith moors is a bit of a jobs worth too!

Sorry, I spent a bit of time actually experimenting with leadcore on waters, not just following 'fashion'. I have been on waters where fish were lost (died) after being tethered after being found caught up in weed, and I have had to go into the water (chest deep in winter) to untether fish snagged up with leadcore around branches. It only takes around a length of 300mm to be able to snag on a branch to tether a fish.

15lb mono vs 45lb leadcore, a sudden pull can break 15lb mono, that same pull is NOT going to break 45lb leadcore. A carp can go from zero to full speed in near as damnit 4feet, that shock can break mono or fluorocarbon, (especially the knots, which are normally the weakest point), I have seen it happen. The hook may actually stay in the lip, but the line breaks. Carp can then over a day or two eject even a barbed hook, barbless even quicker, and that both myself and Ken Townley have seen. (His chapter in Tim Paisleys Big Carp).

Keith Moors wrote about a fish that was towing around a ball of weed caught up in leadcore that had to be destroyed after its jaw had been broken by the rubbish it was towing around.

Tying mono around my legs is a comment just trying to distract from the point, and is meaningless as fish do not usually get caught up in mono. Leadcore also somehow seems to bite into anything it snags around, whereas mono will often slide over it.

Are you sure?

This action cannot be undone.
