tea towel in your butt ring , or bit of foam i think would do the same thing. ah i see its to stop the line coming off the spool awkwardly i see what its for now.

I use a square sponge scourer pan scrubber.
Wedges between the spool and the rod and does the same job.
50p for six from Aldi and you can clean your pans with them as well 👍
