I have a ECWCS US army
goretex jacket that is quite a few years old . I'm feeling it's in need of a re-waterproof . Is this possible and if so what is the best method, thanks ?

I thought gortex was a membrane and once it starts leaking that is end of life for the garment, but I might be wrong 😑

£15 to wash and reproof and I've had to do this to New army gore-tex. You cannot wash gore-tex with conventional washing powder /liquid as it damages the taped seems and can clog the material allowing water to be absorb through. Storm is the best stuff I've used and is recommended by gore-tex.

It's the phosphates in powdered detergent that bind to the goretex fabric that causes the water to soak through, the best method is wash your machine with nothing in it on a boil wash setting first, clean any excess detergent out of the tray, then use Nikwax TX wash, then use TX Direct proofer, you only need to add TX Direct every other time or so as just cleaning the goretex is often sufficient to give good waterproof performance believe it or not!
You can also use pure soap flakes to clean your membrane garments and achieve the same at a much reduced cost.

I used nikwax on my laminated gore-tex motor cycle suits for some time but as gore-tex themselves recommend storm I switched to it and it seems better as it keeps water Beeding off the surface for longer so needs doing less often.

would def wash the jacket in nikwax type detergent but wouldn't proof with it. . .the newer spray on grangers repel type proofers are also garbage as they are now fluoro free and do not last . . .personally as its surplus (and fishing gear, not high activity mountain kit) I'd use Fabsil . . .
Wash your jacket, hang it on the line - get a pressure sprayer filled with Fabsil Gold and spray it thoroughly using a cloth to stop overruns / beading etc - you may lose a little breathability but your jacket will perform like new in the next deluge and it will be effectively allergic to rain . . . . .

I've never had a problem with Nikwax TX Direct proofer but I'll give Storm a try off the back of your recommendation, I actually have a Paramo Halcon jacket that I regularly proof, so I'll see if it gives a better outcome 👍

I'd never had a problem either but as gore-tex recommends storm for my proshell bike gear I tried it and it seems to make water run off for longer.
