Easy Team,
I haven't made serious hookbaits in some time - I've been whipping together some basic attractive feeder boilies to add in with my particles every now and then. I didn't fish much last year, and those times I did, I used boilies that I had made 1 or 2 years prior.
I've moved since my last few stints of baitmaking, and my recipe books with experimentation notes have been lost, and my mind ain't getting sharper with age.
I live in Canada and fishmeal access it non-existent.
Is there any common ingredient that can replicate the qualities of fishmeal in terms of bindability, leakability, porosity, etc? I've made a few batches with some very expensive fishmeal that I had imported, but I can't sustain that long term.
I'm trying to stay as far away from meat as possible also by choice, due to lots of catfish present.
Any ideas for a replacement for fishmeal where I don't end up with a boilie as solid as a pasta?

I use fishmeal, LT94 and csp90 for it's protein content and some solubility.
To mimic all of these I would advise a blend of brewers yeast, yellow pea meal and milk powder.

Milks, bird foods and nut meals.

If I were yin Canada and wanting to make boilies without fishmeal with ingredients that are in supermarkets I would start with Paul Forward's recipe from Carpworld February 2011 p.161
250g White maize meal
250g Semolina
200g Soya flour
250g EMP (birdfood)
50g Desiccated coconut
For a 6 egg mix add:
150g Crunchy peanut butter
20ml Chocolate flavour (from Tesco's cake making shelf)
1ml Sweetener
Apparently particularly effective in winter and spring. BTW - Paul's aim was to provide a recipe for a cheap bait that was effective. He didn't claim that this was the best bait.
If you PM me an e-Mail address I can send you scans of the article.

LOL - I have copies of my favourite recipes and a link to the source where I know it as so many old websites and posts are deleted and the information is lost.

Have you looked for a supplier of trout pellets? I have a friend in Canada that uses these ground up in boilies as a fishmeal alternative.

Dont even have to ground up just get trout food for really small ones it is powder like substance and it is great in boilies, as paste etc...

Thanks for the replies so far gentlemen, some good alternatives there.
I can obtain pellets, and have used them before ground up in my mixes.
Perhaps I glossed over the main idea behind my request, and that is that I'm trying to find an ingredient that behaves in the mix like fishmeal does. The few fishmeal boilies that I made were light, low-density, flaky, open, bloody perfect little balls. I have not been able to replicate that texture with anything else. Actually, that's not true, I have, but I lost my friggin' notes and can't remember what ingredients I used to make a similar texture.
Nutrition, attractors, cost, etc I can and will cover separately.

Thanks James, much appreciated, and I was waiting for you chime in!
I think we were all a bit too excited to talk about this in depth at Keating.
I will look into Enervite ingredients and some good old-fashioned trial and error with the information above.
Cheers mate.

Craig showed me a picture of his boilies yesterday and they look good, might taste and smell crap but I can't tell that from 5500 miles away

No not yet. He has just told me these are a different mix as you are now not allowed to use animal products in/for baits.
Funny the mix he has just shared with me is not a million miles away from that one you have just put up (but no liver)...only so many ways to skin a cat as they say
