Hi all,

I'm just setting up again after a long break from fishing. I was primarily a silver fish angler fishing local matches using 4mm expanders, maggots, corn etc etc. Having moved house I now find myself surrounded with 'carp puddles' and so am gearing up to suit with a view to doing some matches on there once I get a feel for how things work. Tackle bit is about done now but I was wondering if anyone could steer me in the right direction regarding pellets, wafters, mini-boilies and the like. Have looked at the the 'normal' match fishing shops I get the distinct impression that the baits on offer are mostly there to catch the angler and not the fish. 'Ours is the best by far' sort of thing as you might expect. I'm aware of the Coppens/Skrettings stuff for the pellets but again am still wondering if this is the way to go or whether there are better, more proven bulk buy alternatives out there? Wafters etc, too many to choose from!

Thought I'd come on here to ask the guys who know instead of listening to all the 'armchair experts' who think that they do.

I'll also be looking to pick your brains regarding rigs too if that's ok? I'm looking to replicate hinge rigs/d-rigs but on a smaller scale. Think I have it right but I'll take some photos and let you have a look to see if I'm on the right track.

Thanks very much.

Dave.

You won't go far wrong with the pellets you've mentioned.

Boilie wise to some extent will depend on whether you have freezer access. I've never fished carp matches, are there rules that stop you using worms, maggots, casters etc. I think if I was pressured to catch in a short time window these would be my first option.

Thanks for that

No rules that I'm aware of regarding baits. I was thinking of, for instance, fishing a bomb set up as a bolt rig on a short fluorocarbon hooklink and using mini boilies/wafters maybe. Method feeder another option using micro pellets. Meat and corn etc obviously no bother but it was more really looking for advice with regard to reliable brands/flavours of mini boilies and wafters as opposed to just tagging along with the guys who just buy stuff because the manufacturers claim that it works better than all of the others. If I can use the brands and flavours which the larger, wiser carp will scoff then at least I know that I can be confident in my bait and just concentrate on the presentation of it.

I do have freezer access but only limited space though.

Thanks for the reply.

Apologies, I probably should have mentioned just in case it makes a difference. The waters I'll be fishing are mainly small 'stockies' averaging 6lb or so. Matches can be won with 100lb of 5lb fish sort of thing. The odd mid double will be there too but it sounds as though the main bulk of the catches are of the smaller stamp. My thoughts were that if I adopt the methods which are good enough to fool the bigger, wiser fish, then I should do well fooling the 'less educated' ones.

Single grain of fake corn will trick 99% of them carp m8 and probably throw up some of the better ones.

Agree. Method feeder with fake corn on the hair would be my go to option in those circumstances. I would probably have 2 grains, one pop up and one bottom bait

Cheers chaps 👍🏼

Artificial corn looks a good bet. Are there any particular brands which stand out. Same old story when I just Googled it, as in everyone's selling it!

Thanks for the help everyone.

Personally i use the ESP plastic corn

Comes in different sizes in the same packet and has little recesses moulded into the grains to fit the hair stop flush. Doubt it makes a difference but looks a lot neater

You'll never make it in the marketing department....... 😂

Would've thought that a pellet would be better than a bit of fake corn on the sort of water you're talking about. Tactics wont catch you the bigger fish, you just have to wade through the numbers.
Are you sure?
